More States join IMO call to designate seafarers as key workers
Forty-five IMO Member States and one Associate Member have now designated seafarers as key workers, which is a key step in resolving the ongoing crew change crisis. In a circular letter (4204/add.35) issued on 14 December, IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim calls on Member States that have not yet done so to take action as a matter of urgency.
Key worker designation for seafarers is essential to exempt these professionals from specific COVID-related travel restrictions, allowing them to travel between their country of residence and ships, and to be repatriated at the end of their contracts.

Singapore-registered ships advised to be vigilant after oil tanker hit by explosion in Saudi Arabia
All Singapore-registered ships operating in and around Saudi Arabia should be vigilant and take necessary precautions after an oil tanker was hit by an explosion, said the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
No Singaporeans were on board the tanker and all crew members are safe, added MPA in response to CNA's queries on Wednesday (Dec 6).

Indian Coast Guard commissions 2nd offshore patrol vessel.
The Indian Coast Guard on Tuesday morning commissioned Sujeet the second in the series of 105m offshore patrol vessels. The vessel has been designed and built indigenously by Goa Shipyard. Sujeet was commissioned at the hands of secretary (defence production) IAS Raj Kumar. Sujeet means auspicious victory.

Local Cargo Ship Latest to Fall Victim to Gulf of Guinea Pirates
A smaller general cargo ship has become the latest vessel to fall victim to predators operating in the Gulf of Guinea. The security services are reporting that a vessel that operates in the local region was boarded and five African nations were abducted from the crew.
The Cap Saint Georges, a 700 DWT vessel, built in 1973 and registered in Cameroon, had departed Cameroon and was underway to her homeport in Togo according to Praesidium International when the attack occurred.

What? Tanker NEW RANGER was attacked third time?
Cargo ship was attacked by pirates at around 0340 UTC Dec 15 in Gulf of Guinea west of Principe. It may sound like a bad joke, but ill-fated tanker NEW RANGER was under attack, again, third time in a row. According to available ships tracks in area, NEW RANGER was the one crossing attack position at the time of attack. It is said, that tanker was probably boarded, but as likely, she escaped boarding, maybe attack was thwarted by guards on board.

Hopper dredger sank in Singapore Strait
Hopper dredger TSHD KING RICHARD X reported sank at around 0000 WIB (UTC +7) Dec 15 at Batu Ampat Anchorage, Indonesia, Singapore Strait, where she was positioned since March 2018, understood in a lay-up, with 4 maintenance crew. The ship sank due to a gradual water ingress. The ship developed list, probably capsized, 4 watchmen on board were evacuated before ship sank.

One crew fell overboard, another jumped to save him, one of them died
One crew of general cargo ship MARE fell overboard in Varna waters, Bulgaria, shortly after the ship western Varna port in the evening Dec 14. Another crew jumped overboard to save him. Understood because of night time, they couldn t be rescued immediately, SAR was launched with deployment of port and CG boats. One seaman was picked up, alive, while another one regretfully, was found later dead.
