Sri Lanka: Port workers engage in a silent protest opposing the sale of the ECT
Port employees staged a silent protest against the sale of the East Container Terminal on Thursday.
"We are ready to raise funds to operate the East Container Terminal. If the government is willing to safeguard the most valuable resource of the country, we are ready to be its investors," General Secretary of the Progressive Trade Union on Commerce, Industry, and Services Shyamal Sumanaratne said.

Governments Have Failed In Their Duty Of Care Towards Seafarers Under International Law - ILO
In a landmark ruling the International Labour Organisation's (ILO) Committee of Experts has sent a strong message to governments that they have failed in their duty of care towards seafarers under international law during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the first ruling of its kind, the committee of 20 eminent jurists has found that governments have failed abjectly to protect the minimum standards for the protection of seafarers rights, as set out in international law under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006.

More states join IMO call to designate seafarers as key workers
In a circular letter issued this week, IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim called on member states that have not yet done so to take action as a matter of urgency.
Key worker designation for seafarers is essential to exempt these professionals from specific COVID-related travel restrictions, allowing them to travel between their country of residence and ships, and to be repatriated at the end of their contracts.

Shipping lines accuse Indian government of interference in freight rates
The new legislation - Merchant Shipping Bill (MSB) 2020 - is meant to replace existing policies that were enacted several decades ago under the Merchant Shipping Act (MSA) 1958. The MSA is set to be repealed.
The policymakers have set the stage for a regulatory framework to create greater transparency into ocean carrier pricing for export-import and domestic cargo transportation - an issue that has historically been complex and acrimonious.

Adani Ports gains 3% as company, JV to raise $300 million
Shares of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd rose 2.5% on Tuesday after the company and its joint venture announced plans to to raise $300 million.
At 1150 am, the stock traded 1.9% higher at ₹476.10 apiece on the BSE, while the Sensex was down 0.5% at 46008.53. The stock has risen 30% since the start of the year compared to an 11% rise in Sensex.

Captain of Russian nuclear container carrier SEVMORPUT was medevaced by Spanish Maritime Rescue helicopter in the afternoon Dec 16 and transported to a hospital in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, with symptoms of meningitis. SEVMORPUT is returning to S-Petersburg after her Antarctic expedition voyage was cancelled, due to damaged propeller.

Cargo ship capsized after cargo shift, 15 crew missing, South China sea
General cargo ship XIN HONG issued distress signal at around 1630 LT (UTV +7) Dec 17 in South China sea off Phu Quy island, southern Vietnam, northeast of Vung Tau. The ship with 7,800 tons of clay on board and 15 crew, including 11 Chinese and 4 Vietnamese nationalities, was en route from Lumut Malaysia to China, reportedly Hong Kong. Ship reported cargo shift, developing list, and asked for shelter off Phu Quy.

KMTC container ship collided with local boat leaving Surabaya
Container ship KMTC JEBEL ALI collided with coastal cargo boat BAHTERA SALBACH while leaving Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, on Dec 15. Cargo boat sank, 8 crew on board were rescued. Container ship returned to Surabaya, remained at port for investigation, left port early in the morning Dec 18, bound for HK.
