Seafarer shortages loom if crew change crisis persist, warns MAJ
Rear Admiral (retired) Peter Brady, MAJ director general, highlighted the potential danger to the shipping industry if there is a mass exodus of crew from their sea-going jobs to take up shore-based employment.
"If seafarers are not available to operate the ships, those vessels will simply lay alongside idle. Does the world need that now?", he challenged, warning that the shipping industry needs to demonstrate to world leaders the vital role crew play in the supply chain.

Shipping faces "safety gap" as it transforms
A white paper released by classification society DNV GL identifies a looming "safety gap" between shipping’s existing approach to safety risks and its plans for greater digitalization and the adoption of alternative fuels.

Crew changes cross 100,000 at Port of Singapore
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has crossed the 100,000 mark for crew change carried out in Singapore during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Recognising the importance of ensuring that international trade and the flow of supplies into Singapore remain uninterrupted amidst the pandemic, MPA continues to facilitate crew changes for ships of all flags and crew of various nationalities through a safe corridor.

Seafarers accuse agency of keeping mum as their rights violated
Some seafarers have protested what they term neglect by the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) as their rights are violated on board foreign ships.
This is despite the KMA saying cases of seafarers being abandoned and exploited by marine employers have reduced.

ITF Calls on Shipping Companies to Save Seafarers Stranded Off China
The International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) is calling on companies to step up efforts to help seafarers stranded on ships off China as Beijing continues to informally ban coal imports from Australia.
"It s expensive, but it’s the right thing to do," the ITF urged in a message to shipping companies asking that they pay the millions of dollars the union group says is required to address the problem.

Strange crew change in Chornomorsk
Bulk carrier SILVER LADY arrived at Chornomorsk Ukraine on Feb 5, having 21 crew on board, most or all of them of Filipino nationality. The ship was berthed, on Feb 6 one crew was taken off the ship on a covid suspicion. Was he having high temperature? Running nose? - Ukrainian media didnt specify, what this suspicion was about.

CMA CGM Post-Panamax reportedly ran aground while transiting Suez
Container ship CMA CGM TITUS reportedly ran aground while transiting Suez Canal in northern direction on Feb 15 at kilometer 54 mark. According to track she was aground for about two hours. She was refloated and safely completed transit. Understood no damages found, CMA CGM TITUS continued her voyage to Lebanon, left Lebanon waers on Feb 16, bound for Piraeus.

Two crew injured in accident, airlifted to hospital, Med
Two crew on board of bulk carrier NAVIGARE BOREAS were injured in a work-related accident on Feb 16, Master requested medical assistance. The ship was sailing south of Menorca, Balearic islands, Spain. Salvamento Maritimo scrambled a helicopter, injured crew airlifted and transferred to hospital. Bulk carrier continued her voyage from Tarragona Spain to Gabes Tunisia.
