India: Mumbai University starts new Center for Excellence in Maritime Studies
The new Center for Excellence in Maritime Studies at the University of Mumbai (MU) was inaugurated by the Governor of Maharashtra and Chancellor of MU Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Monday.
The center will offer PG Diploma, Masters and PhD programmes in Maritime Studies from this academic year.

PMA Supports Seafarers On Panamanian Flag Vessels And Nationals On Foreign Flags
The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) through the General Directorate of Seafarers (DGGM), has been managing various actions in two (2) international cases, in order to safeguard the Panamanian crew members who are on the ship "NISSI COMMANDER I" of the Mongolian Ship Registry, as well as the crew of other nationalities who are on board the ship named "IBA", which belongs to the Panama Ship Registry, for which the following actions have been taken.

Search ends for Filipino crew member lost off German coast
Rescuers have ended their search for a 24-year-old Filipino crew member who fell from a cargo ship off the German coast during a storm over the weekend, officials said Monday.
The Danish-flagged freighter Santa Clara reported the woman had gone overboard while working early Sunday, prompting a search-and-rescue response with several ships and a rescue helicopter.

Malaysia: Petronas Launches Tender for 16 Offshore Support Vessels
Malaysia s state energy firm Petronas recently launched a tender for the construction of 16 offshore support vessels (OSV), The Edge Weekly reported on Saturday.
The newspaper reported, citing sources, that the invitation to bid is for the first batch of contracts and Petronas has plans to build 100 vessels in four years as it phases out its old vessels.

Disabled Dutch freighter under tow, East Frisian Islands
General cargo ship PEAK BILBAO suffered engine failure in North sea north of East Frisian islands in the afternoon Feb 7. The ship transited Kiel Canal on her way from Szczecin Poland to Ridham Dock UK, with cargo of construction plasterboard, and was in German waters when accident occurred. Authorities were duly informed, emergency tug NORDIC (IMO 9525962) responded, taking disabled, drifting freighter on tow at around 1400 UTC Feb 7.

MAERSK mega container ship broke down in Vung Tau fairway, Vietnam
Container ship MAERSK ESSEX suffered engine failure while proceeding in fairway with pilot on board, on her way to Vung Tau Container Port (Cai Mep, CMIT Terminal, Ba Ria), at 0325 LT (UTC +7) Feb 8, near buoy 0. Disabled ship drifted in southern direction and according to track, had to anchor.

Chinese Capesize bulk carrier collided with Japanese Navy submarine
Capesize bulk carrier OCEAN ARTEMIS collided with Japanese Navy SORYU-class submarine at 1058 Tokyo time Feb 8 some 30 nm south of Kochi Prefecture coast, Shikoku Island, Japan, Pacific. Bulk carrier is en route from Qingdao China to Mizushima Japan, submarine was heading to drills area off Cape Ashizuri in Kochi Prefecture. Understood submarine either surfaced or was surfacing, prior to collision.
