Pirates Kidnap Five Seafarers from OSV off Nigeria
Armed pirates have kidnapped five crew members from an offshore support vessel in the latest pirate attack off Brass, Nigeria.
According to data provided by IMB Piracy Reporting Centre, pirates armed with machine guns in two speed boats approached the unnamed vessel while it was underway some 32 nautical miles off the coast of Brass, midday on March 9.
The ship s Captain immediately notified the naval escort security boat which maneuvered to engage the attackers. One speed boat closed in from port side of the vessel and crossed the bow, while the other speed boat exchanged fire with the security boat.
Alarm was raised and the crew went to the engine room, while all power was shut down.
The pirates boarded the vessel with the aid of an elongated ladder and broke into the accommodation, vandalized the cabins and took crew belongings and vessel s properties.
They then proceeded to the engine room, kidnapped five men and escaped. The remaining crew members sailed the vessel under escort to a safe anchorage.
IMB Piracy Reporting Centre added that one Nigerian Navy armed guard was reported killed in the exchange of fire between the naval security boat and the pirates.
Relevant authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Fire-Stricken Grande America Sinks off France
The fire-stricken Grande America sank in the afternoon hours of March 12 some 180 nautical miles west of the French coast, the Maritime Prefecture of Atlantic confirmed.
After it suffered a fire during the night of March 10, the 1997-built ship developed a worsening starboard list. The ro-ro container vessel subsequently capsized and sank in a water depth of around 4,600 meters.
All 26 crewmembers and one passenger were safely evacuated onto Royal Navy s HMS Argyll on March 11.
The fire started in one of the containers loaded on the weather deck, spreading to other containers positioned close by, while the vessel was in the Bay of Biscay, sailing from Hamburg, Germany to Casablanca, Morocco.
Italian Grimaldi Group, the owner and operator of Grande America, earlier appointed the salvage company Ardent to provide assistance on the matter.

NYK Develops Software that Helps with Ship Berthing
Japanese shipping company NYK has, together with Monohakobi Technology Institute (MTI) and Japan Marine Science (JMS), developed a system that assists with vessel berthing.
As explained, the system - patent pending - assesses a vessel s controllability and visualizes the risk in the berthing operation to reduce the burden on the operator and eliminate accidents caused by human factors.
Trials on actual vessels have been conducted, and NYK plans to gradually introduce the system to its managed ships. JMS will offer it for sale within the industry.
The technology used in this system is expected to be applied to the automatic shore-arriving system for manned autonomous ships that the NYK Group has been working to implement, according to the company.
When a ship is berthing, a guideline indicates the exact reduction in ship speed as the distance to the wharf nears. Following this guideline, the ship takes wind and tidal information into consideration while the operator provides instructions to tugs and efforts are made to control the rudder and engine.
The operator normally receives a multitude of information around the vessel and gives instructions to a number of relevant people. Such a heavy workload can lead to accidents caused by human factors, NYK said.
In the past, near misses have occurred, ranging from overruns and abnormally close approaches to serious accidents such as damage to the vessel hull, mooring and cargo handling facilities, and the pier.
Thus, the NYK Group has worked to develop a system to assist with berthing and subsequently eliminate accidents.
The software evaluates a ship s controllability and visualizes accident risks in real time by analyzing information such as distance to the wharf, ship speed, ship-performance parameters, tugboat arrangement, and weather data.
The ship operator can use a tablet to confirm the relative position and approach speed of the vessel and assess accident risk.
This can reduce the burden ship operator are facing and prevent berthing accidents by alerting of risks to prevent accidents caused by misjudgement, NYK further said.

Saga LNG Shipping Names Its First LNG Carrier
Saga LNG Shipping named its new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier at China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) shipyard on March 13, 2019.
Named Saga Dawn, the 45,000 m3 vessel would be delivered to the company in May and enter into service shortly after.
Saga LNG Shipping said that the unit is the world s first LNG carrier featuring an IMO type A LNG containment system, based on LNT Marine’s patented LNT A-BOX design.
The ABS-classed vessel features Wartsila dual-fuel main and auxiliary engines.
"We are confident the momentum of this significant milestone will allow us to order many more similar vessels in the near future to meet evolving market demands," said David Wu, Founder and CEO of Saga LNG Shipping.
The company explained that Saga Dawn "brings new life to the dwindling midsized LNG fleet." The vessel has a fully laden draft of nine meters and no partial loading restrictions.
"We expect Saga Dawn to pave the way for new business models, innovative trades and the opening up of stranded demand centers, especially in Asia," said Jonathan Verswijver, VP of Business Development at Saga LNG Shipping.
