Mayflower Autonomous Ship s AI Captain Takes to Sea
A new AI Captain , which will enable the Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) to self-navigate across the Atlantic later this year, is to go to sea this month for testing, technology company IBM and marine research organization ProMare have announced.
The trial will take place on a manned research vessel off the coast of Plymouth in the UK.

Ports begin enforcing bunker fuel carriage ban
Port enforcement agencies in the U.S. and around the world tightened their oversight of the IMO 2020 low-sulfur fuel regulation on March 1 to include detaining and penalizing ships found to be carrying noncompliant fuel.
The IMO 2020 regulation, which went into effect Jan. 1, lowered the maximum amount of sulfur in fuel allowed to be burned by a ship from 3.5% to 0.5%.

Shipping goods into Nigeria costs more than for African peers
It costs as much as five times more to ship goods into Nigeria than it does to deliver items via other African ports, consultancy SBM Intelligence said in a note.
SBM tracked shipments from the European Union into Appapa, a key import hub in Nigeria s commercial capital of Lagos, Durban in South Africa and Tema in Ghana over three months.

Direct shipping route links China s Tianjin port with northern Europe
German shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd AG launched a direct freight route Wednesday linking north China s Tianjin port with northern Europe, according to the company s local branch.
The route is expected to further increase the shipment exported from Tianjin to European ports and European goods will also arrive in Tianjin through the direct route, said Tian Liqiang, with Hapag-Lloyd s Tianjin branch.
