36 cargo ships banned from flying Togo flag
Togo Government published a list of 36 cargo ships, registered between November 14, 2012 and November 26, 2017, which are banned from flying Togo flag, because of their illegal activities.

TEN Sells Its Oldest VLCC for Scrap
Greek tanker owner and operator Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN) has availed of the strong demolition prices to sell its oldest very large crude carrier. The Panama-flagged VLCC Millennium, featuring 301,200 dwt, was built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in 1998. Based on the data from Vesselsvalue, the ship was sold in March fetching USD 447 per light displacement ton (ltd) and will be dismantled in Bangladesh

Klaveness Forms New Combination Carrier Firm
Norwegian shipping company Torvald Klaveness has, together with its existing investors, established a new company to own and operate modern combination carriers. The new company, Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC), is envisaged to provide the most environmentally friendly transportation system with the lowest carbon emissions in the industry, according to Klaveness.

Reefer grounding, S-Petersburg
Reefer ANDALUCIA STAR ran aground at Novokanonerskaya Harbor, S-Petersburg Big Port, Russia, at 0745 Moscow time Apr 25, while entering harbor, reported MRCC Moscow. At 0835 Moscow time she was refloated with the help of 3 port tugs, and berthed in harbour. No damages, no hull breaches found during survey.

Russian freighter aground or refloated? Denmark
Yet ship s status not clear. She s still at anchor, or probably, aground local sources said, citing officials, that the ship is detained until presenting to authorities plan of further movements and proving ship s seaworthiness. According to local media citing authorities, the ship ran aground when pushed by wind gusts. According to other sources, she ran aground while trying to avoid collision with sailing yacht. No damages, no leak found.

Breached freighter leaked some 50 liters of fuel, Rapa Nui
General cargo ship LAGO ICALMA, anchored in Hanga Roa, bay, Easter Island (famous Rapa Nui: Rapa Nui, Spanish: Isla de Pascua), suffered hull breach inflicted by a barge at her side on Apr 25. Breach was in fuel tank area, small amount of fuel, some 50 liters, was spilled. All necessary and prescribed measures were taken, to prevent stain spread and to cleanse it.

Ballast Water Treatment Association Established
The manufacturers and stakeholders in the ballast water treatment equipment market have taken a major step forward by codifying a unified manufacturers association. The Ballastwater Equipment Manufacturers Association (BEMA) met on April 19, 2018 for their first Annual Meeting and elected the inaugural Board of Directors.
The paramount need for this association arose from the growing demand for well-founded information on the practicability of ballast water treatment technologies, as well as on the technical and environmental aspects of implementing ballast water management regulations worldwide.

COSCO Shipping to Deliver Profit in 1Q 2018
COSCO Shipping International (Singapore) said it expects to deliver a profit in the first quarter of 2018. In its latest profit guidance for the first quarter ended March 31, 2018, the company said that its board of directors is of the view that the first quarter results "will show a profit as compared to the net loss recorded in the corresponding period of the previous financial year."

19 Oil Ships Held by Houthis in Yemen, Saudi Arabia Says
Houthi forces in Yemen are said to be holding 19 oil vessels in the area of al-Mustaqaf, according to Yemen Comprehensive Humanitarian Operation, a relief program launched this year by the Saudi-led Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen.
The ships in question have been seized following the Coalition s authorization of their entry into the Hodeidah port, which is controlled by Houthi forces, the relief said. The Embassy of Saudi Arabia to Washington DC informed that the 19 ships, carrying over 200 thousand tons of petroleum byproducts are being held in the anchoring zone outside of the port of Hodeida.

Royal Caribbean Drives Towards Record Yearly Earnings
Miami-based cruise liner conglomerate Royal Caribbean Cruises ended the first quarter of 2018 with a further rise in its earnings. RCL delivered a profit of USD 218.7 million in Q1 2018, an increase of 1.9 percent when compared to a profit of USD 214.7 million seen in the same period a year earlier. In addition, total revenues stood at USD 2.03 billion in the quarter ended March 31, 2018, against USD 2.01 billion posted in Q1 2017.

Westports sees pick-up in container volume in 2H
Westports Holdings Bhd, which expects to register weak performance in container volume in the first half of this year, expects container traffic to pick up in the second half, driven by normalisation in the realignment of shipping alliances. However, the terminal operator in Port Klang is unlikely to recover this year to its record container volume of 9.95 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) seen in 2016, despite the projected improvement in the second half, its group managing director Datuk Ruben Emir Gnanalingam said.

Revenue at port of Amsterdam grows in 2017
Havenbedrijf Amsterdam N.V. realised revenue of EUR 150.1 million, compared to EUR 146.3 million in 2016. The operating result increased from EUR 73.3 million in 2016 to EUR 74.3 million in 2017. These and other key figures are stated in the annual report published today.
Koen Overtoom, CEO of Port of Amsterdam: Record transshipment of 81.3 million tonnes in 2017 contributed to our good operating result of more than 74 million euros. 2017 also saw the arrival of a number of fantastic businesses in the Port, such as Bio Energy Netherlands and Chaincraft, which are contributing to the achievement of our strategy and Vision2030. We have also expressed an ambition to prepare for being a coal-free port in 2030.

DP World Reports 7.3% Gross Volume Growth In First Quarter Of 2018
DP World Limited handled 17.6 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) across its global portfolio of container terminals in the first quarter of 2018, with gross container volumes growing by 7.3% year-on-year on a reported basis, and 8.4% on a like-for-like1 basis, well ahead of Drewry Maritime s industry estimate of 4.6% global throughput growth for 1Q20182.
The first quarter witnessed a continuation of the recovery in global trade and all three regions delivered growth, especially our terminals in Europe, Middle East & Africa and Australia. UAE continues to deliver stable growth and handled 3.8 million TEU, growing 2.9% year-on-year in 1Q2018.

Singapore port to announce mandatory use of flow meters for gasoil bunkers -sources
Singapore s Maritime Port Authority (MPA) is set to announce it is making use of mass-flow-meters (MFM) mandatory onboard marine gasoil barges used to refuel large ships, two people with knowledge of the matter said.
The announcement will be made at a gala dinner in the city state organised by the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) later on Thursday, the people said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media.
