Two crew dead, one probably dead, bulk carrier returned to Cape Verde
Two seamen died on board of bulk carrier ATLANTIC HARMONY, another one allegedly also died, but third death not yet confirmed. Bulk carrier called at Capo Verde on May 7, probably for bunkering or supplies, being en route from Brazil to Gibraltar, on May 9 she left Praia same day to continue her voyage, but on May 8 turned back and headed for Praia, where she was anchored on May 9. Understood ship s interrupted voyage and return to Cape Verde was caused by that mortal accident. Seamen believed to die from poisoning, no other details available at the moment. All three - two confirmed dead and one dead or injured - are Ukrainians.

Turkish bulk carrier with Russian wheat bombed by Saudi forces
Turkish bulk carrier INCE INEBOLU reportedly was fired upon or hit by missiles by Saudi forces while trying to approach port of destination Saleef (Hodeidah), Yemen, with 49770 tons of wheat on board, being authorized by UN Verification and Inspection Mechanism for Yemen (UNVIM) office in Djibouti, after the required inspection. Understood the wheat originated from Russia, and was loaded in Novorossiysk. The ship was fired upon on most probably, May 10, while approaching Saleef.

Panama to Investigate ACP s Treatment of Tug Captains
A Panamanian government agency is to launch an inquiry into the Panama Canal Authority s treatment of tugboat captains, the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots (MM&P) said. The Autoridad Nacional de Transparencia Internacional (ANTAI), in charge with investigating ethics violations and corruption, will look into the tugboat captains protesting forced overtime, unilateral manning cuts and other safety concerns.

Italian Port Workers Launch Nation-Wide Strike
Workers across Italian ports launched a 24-hour strike on May 11, voicing their dissatisfaction over the lack of lashing legislation enforcement and poor safety in Italian ports. The strike is lead by unions FILT CGIL, Fit Cisl and Uiltrasporti Nazionale, affiliates of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) and Dockers division of the European Transport Workers Federation (ETF). All Italian ports are shut today, according to the Political Secretary of ETF Dockers Livia Spera.

Hunter Group Declares Options for Three More VLCC s
Hunter Group revealed that its board has decided to exercise options for the construction of three additional very large crude carriers (VLCC) at Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME). As informed, each of the option vessels has a price of USD 82.8 million, plus USD 2.7 million for scrubber. Estimated delivery times for the three 300,000 dwt ships are May 31, 2020, June 30, 2020, and August 31, 2020.

Striking dockers shut down Israel s Haifa and Ashdod ports
Striking workers shut down Israel s two main ports, leaving dozens of cargo ships stranded on Thursday in protest against the creation of competing foreign-run docks. At least 17 ships were waiting to unload at Ashdod port, with another 14 lined up to come in. Ten were held up at Haifa port, with more ships due to come, spokesmen for the ports said. Dockers protested by not coming into work, said officials at both ports, though cruise ships were still able to dock in Haifa.

Ford Motor s imported vehicles are being held up at Chinese ports, three people with knowledge of the matter, underscoring how US goods are facing increased customs scrutiny in China amid a tense trade stand-off. The three people said Ford cars and those of its premium Lincoln brand were facing unusual delays at customs, with officials asking for extra technical checks. Two of the people said US-made models of some German car makers, mainly SUVs, being brought into China, were also affected.

Deeper Yangtze River opens to large vessels after dredging project
A deeper Yangtze River - from Nanjing to its estuary - opened for large vessels on Tuesday, increasing the ability of the lower Yangtze to stimulate the economy, the Ministry of Transport said. The 12.5-meter-deep waterway runs for 431 kilometers, and allows vessels of more than 50,000 metric tons to pass. Vessels with capacity up to 100,000 tons can also navigate the waterway. Before the dredging project, the waterway s depth averaged only 10.5 meters, limiting vessels to 30,000 tons.

Croatia acts to cut red tape for EU-backed LNG terminal project
The Croatian government proposed a special law on Thursday to facilitate the construction of an EU-backed liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the northern Adriatic. The floating terminal is expected to start operations in 2020. The European Union wants the facility to help diversify sources of supply and reduce dependence on Russian gas, most notably for countries in central Europe. Brussels will invest 101.4 million euros ($121 million), or 28 percent of the project s assessed value.

Transporters strike at JNPT could box the exim trade
Exporters and importers shipping their container cargo through Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) near Mumbai could face delays and extra costs, with transport operators taking their trucks off the roads from Wednesday. The strikers want JNPT, India s biggest container port, to scrap a new transport arrangement that was rolled out on May 1.
As many as 11 local transport associations comprising some 1,000 small transporters owning about 17,000 tractor trailers that haul containers to and from the port are agitating against the new transport solution finalised by JNPT to evacuate direct port delivery (DPD) containers from the port.

Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation s new plan gets widespread backing
Bringing considerable relief to the state-run Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation (KSINC), which has been roundly criticised for the Ro-Ro fiasco, its alternative proposal to resume the stalled service on the Fort Kochi- Vypeen route has garnered support from various quarters.
Leading the chorus is the Fort Vypeen Janakeeya Kootayma which backed the KSINC s proposal to operate one vessel for eight hours daily. The KSINC proposal also said while the Ro-Ro can be operated from 6 am- 2pm, the agency s Jhankar service can be pressed into service for the remaining period.
