MOBY ferry mishap, 2 crew injured, Italy
Ferry MOBY NIKI, connecting Piombino port with Porto Ferraio, Elba island, Italy, suffered an accident in engine room at around 1515 LT May 24, shortly after leaving Piombino with some 300 passengers on board. Ferry returned to port under own power, and had to disembark all passengers. Two crew were treated for slight injures. Details unknown, electricity panel shortcut or fire said to be the cause. Ferry resumed sailings on May 25.

Containers with luxury cars collapsed on MAERSK container ship
Several containers loaded with luxury cars, mostly BMW, collapsed on board of container ship MAERSK LIMA, berthed at APM Terminal 4, Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the morning May 23. Cars were smashed, losses estimated to be some hundreds of thousands USD. Terminal already issued a statement denying its alleged faults - containers on board of MAERSK LIMA were destabilized during ship s sailing from Paranagua Brazil to Buenos Aires, the ship experienced rough weather while crossing Rio Grande Do Sul. MAERSK LIMA arrived at Buenos Aires on May 19, in the morning May 25 she was still in Buenos Aires.

Burning tanker set river on fire, Indonesia
Fire erupted on board of tanker SRIKANDI 511, docked at Banjarmasin, south Kalimantan, Indonesia, at around 0200 LT May 25. By 0800 LT fire reportedly was under control or extinguished. Witnesses said they saw "river on fire", meaning that burning oil leaked from tanker into river and drifted downstream. At least 4 ships located downstream from SRIKANDI 511 were said to be damaged by burning fuel on the water. Information is rather sketchy at the moment, updates expected soon.

StealthGas Offloads Three LPG Tankers
LPG shipping company StealthGas has started the year with the sale of three second-hand ships cashing in USD 17 million. The ships in question are the 2006-built Gas Enchanted, which has already been delivered to its new owners, and 1998-built Gas Legacy and 1996-built Gas Evoluzione, scheduled for deliveries in the third quarter of 2018.
"More evidence that values are firming even on older vessels was provided by these sales, as we sold the Gas Legacy at 5.6 times demolition value and the Gas Evoluzione at 4.2 times demolition value," Michael Jolliffe, StealthGas Board Chairman, said.

P&O Unveils Name of Its New Cruise Vessel
P&O Cruises has revealed the name of its newest cruise ship joining the company s fleet in May 2020. The newbuild will be named Iona and the name has been selected from over 30,000 entries to name the vessel. Exactly one month ago, the steel cutting ceremony for the ship was held at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

Brittany Ferries Invests in Two New Ships
France-based shipping company Brittany Ferries has confirmed the charter of two new cruise-ferries to serve its long-haul UK to Spain routes. To be chartered from Swedish shipping company Stena RoRo, the ships will be built at the Avic International Weihai shipyard in China, with the first arriving in 2021.
The latest investment comes after work began this spring on a brand new LNG cruise ferry called Honfleur to serve the Portsmouth - Caen crossing. Like Honfleur, which arrives in 2019, both ships announced today will be registered under the French flag and will be crewed by French seafarers.

Maersk-Backed Blockchain Platform for Marine Insurance Launched
A new marine insurance blockchain platform backed by Maersk Group has been launched today to support marine hull insurance. Named Insurwave, the platform has been built by a joint venture between EY and Guardtime and leverages blockchain and distributed ledger technologies Microsoft Azure infrastructure and ACORD data standards.
The platform is planned to support more than half a million automated ledger transactions and help manage risk for more than 1,000 commercial vessels in the first year.

India Relaxes Cabotage Law
Foreign-flagged ships will no longer need to obtain a license from India s Director General of Shipping to engage in coastal shipping in the country.
The relaxation of the cabotage law, announced by the Ministry of Shipping of India on May 22, relates in particular to shipping of agricultural, fisheries, animal husbandry and horticultural commodities. In practice, this means that international shipping companies would be able to move EXIM containers along India s coast.

Ore/oil river-sea carrier OPTIMAFLOT loaded with 2837 tons of diesel fuel ran aground at 2970 kilometer mark, river Don, Russian Inner Waterways, while heaving up anchor at 0500 Moscow time May 23. The ship drifted aground driven by strong current, beyond fairway, traffic not affected. As of morning May 24, the ship was still aground, two tugs reportedly sent to refloat OPTIMAFLOT.

Maersk Line Boosts Canada-Europe Links with New Transatlantic Service
Danish shipping giant Maersk Line is expanding its presence between Europe s Mediterranean region and Canada to cater for the growing demands on both sides of the Atlantic.
The company is introducing a new weekly service that will be a five-vessel rotation stopping in Salerno and La Spezia (Italy), Fos-sur-Mer (France), Algeciras (Spain), Montreal and Halifax (Canada), and Valencia (Spain). The fully Maersk Line-operated service - the Mediterranean-Montreal Express - will have its first sailing on July 2, departing from Salerno and arriving in Montreal on July 19.

Number of LNG Bunkering Vessels to Double by 2020
The number of LNG bunkering vessels has grown from one at the beginning of 2017 to six in early 2018, with these numbers expected at least to double by 2020, multi-sector industry coalition SEA\LNG said.
Furthermore, it is forecast that in the next five years 30 LNG bunker vessels could be operating worldwide. "The bulk LNG infrastructure is largely built, what remains is the last mile, in which the industry is showing a growing appetite to invest,"Peter Keller, SEA\LNG Chairman, said.

ZIM Reports Wider Loss in Volatile Market
Driven by the instability and volatility in the container shipping market, Israel-based carrier Zim Integrated Shipping Services (ZIM) ended the first quarter of 2018 with a widened net loss.
The company posted net loss of USD 34.1 million in Q1 2018, compared to net loss of USD 6.4 million seen in the corresponding period a year earlier.
As explained, a deterioration in the business environment has been negatively affecting the company s performance.

Leading UAE port operator looking into Serbia s river transport
Looking to develop its neglected water transport, Serbian government signed an agreement with one of the world s biggest port operators from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to cooperate on constructing new ports and privatization of the existing ones.
The "Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation on River Port Development projects" was signed between the Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic and the president of "Dubai Port World" Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem. It foresees investments worth more than 200 million euros, government s press release reads.

SCCT targets trading 2.5m TEUs in 2018: executives
The Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) aims to process 2.5m twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) traded goods this year. Lars Christensen, the CEO of SCCT, said that the company is targeting to maintain the performance rates achieved in 2016 and 2017. However, there are many obstacles and challenges in terms of transportation activities and logistics locally and globally.
In 2017, the company achieved 2.5m TEUs goal-the same rate as last year. In his first interview since he was appointed as CEO of the company, Fang said the SCCT is working to increase the station s efficiency to maintain its current customers and attract new ones.

PSA Makes Formal Approach For P&O;, Offer Higher Than DP World s
Singapore s public sector company PSA International Pte. has confirmed that it is bidding for British container ports and ferries operator, the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. It will improve an offer by Dubai s state-owned port operator Dubai Ports World.
While PSA International, owned by Singapore s state investment firm Temasek Holdings Pte., did not disclose the value of the offer, sources said it could be worth 3.53 billion pounds, comparable with 3.3 billion pounds offered by DP World. The company already hiked its holding in P&O; to 4.1 per cent recently.
