USCG Medevacs Crewman from Bulker off Michigan
A 54-year-old man was medevaced from the bulk carrier Manitowoc off Michigan after experiencing severe abdominal pains, according to the US Coast Guard. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Detroit command center received a report on the crewmember s condition from the 612-foot vessel on June 1.

New VLCC Giant Handed Over to K Line
Japan s shipping major Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) took delivery of its newest very large crude carrier, the 311,000 dwt Tedorigawa. The unit was constructed by China s shipbuilder Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering (NACKS) and handed over to its owner on June 4. Featuring a length of 339.5 meters and a beam of 60 meters, the Panama-flagged mammoth has 161,483 gross tons.

DSME, SHI and HHI to Build HMM s New Mammoths
South Korean shipping major Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has selected three compatriot shipbuilders to build its 20 new eco-friendly mega containerships. The company said that seven 23,000 TEU giants will be constructed by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) and another five will be built by Samsung Heavy Industries.

Tanker attacked and robbed, gang apprehended by MMEA
Tanker LEE BO was boarded by 14 pirates in the morning Jun 1 off Baharu, Malaysia, north of Singapore. Pirates, armed with machetes, robbed the crew of cash and valuables, slightly injured 2 of 12 crew, and moved to nearby MT Bright (no data found), where they were apprehended by The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) team, which descended on tanker from helicopter. Meanwhile, two gang leaders were arrested in Batam, Indonesia. Police already new about gang and its plans. Understood MT BRIGHT was under attack when boarded by pirates, though role of MT BRIGHT isn t clear - MMEA director-general Admiral (Maritime) Datuk Seri Zulkifili Abu Bakar said that "the robbers were targeting another ship but changed their target at the last minute to MT Lee Bo without knowing the oil tanker was not carrying any load".

Large Container Ship THESEUS containers loss and collapse
Container ship THESEUS suffered containers collapse and loss in Gulf of Aden, while en route from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Colombo, Sri Lanka, being caught in cyclone which ravaged northwest Indian ocean. Most probably, containers collapse and loss occurred around May 19, on May 26 numerous containers were spotted drifting off Salalah, Oman. Container ship arrived at Colombo on May 22 and was handled by Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) in just 36 hours, quite a feat, considering the mess there was.

Tanker CHEM NORMA refloated, St. Lawrence river
Tanker CHEM NORMA was refloated in the afternoon Jun 3 after St. Lawrence River Board said on Jun 2 it will reduce water flow on St Lawrence river to rise water level. Tanker finally, was refloated with the help of the tugs, and as of 0300 UTC Jun 4, was entering Iroquios lock for inspection. If no serious damages are found, and there are non reported so far, tanker will continue her voyage after 5-days ordeal.

Shipping industry is gearing to adopt cleaner fuels by 2020
Great changes in energy markets do not always have to flow from great causes. In the case of marine fuel, what seems to outsiders like an apparently modest change to an arcane regulation is going to make waves not just for shipping, but the wider oil business. Other consumers and industries are set for a big New Year s surprise on 1st January 2020.
This is the date when the International Maritime Organisation s new ruling, advanced in October 2016, on the sulphur content of marine fuel comes into force, limiting it to no more than 0.5 percent - today the maximum is 3.5 percent.

Ukraine plans major port infrastructure modernization worth 1.68 bln USD
Ukraine announced a modernization plan composed of 46 projects in its ports by 2030 with a total cost of over one billion U.S. dollars. While speaking at the Ukrainian Ports Forum 2018 in the port city of Odessa, Ukraine s Deputy Prime Minister Volodymyr Kistion said the majority of the projects envisage the development of new transshipment capacities, including the construction of new berths and cargo handling terminals.

BEST container terminal in the Port of Barcelona orders more Konecranes ARMGs Konecranes has won an order for 6 Automated Rail Mounted Gantry (ARMG) cranes from BEST container terminal, a Hutchison operation in the Port of Barcelona.
BEST container terminal already operates 48 Konecranes ARMGs in a large automated container yard. The cranes currently on order are identical to those already working, stacking 40T containers 1-over-5 high and 9 wide.

Alphaliner: Average Container Carriers Capacity Up by 9.1% This Year
Alphaliner reported that the average capacity operated by the 13 largest carriers over the first five months of the year has increased by 9.1 per cent compared to the same period of 2017. Zim has experienced the fastest pace of growth, with a 24.5 per cent increase, while Hyundai Merchant Marine is the sole line to have posted a decrease, with a 24.6 per cent drop. HMM also recently announced that it will exit the Transatlantic trade when it ceases to purchase slots on 2M vessels.
