Scorpio Tankers Signs Sale, Leaseback for Six More MRs
Monaco-based shipowner Scorpio Tankers has reached an agreement to sell and leaseback six MR product tankers to CMB Financial Leasing. The units in question are STI Battery, STI Milwaukee, STI Tribeca, STI Bronx, STI Manhattan, and STI Seneca. Upon completion, the company said that it expects its liquidity to increase by USD 52 million in aggregate after the repayment of outstanding debt.

Panama Canal Sets New Monthly Tonnage Record
For the third time since its inauguration, the Expanded Panama Canal set a new monthly tonnage record of 38.1 million tons (PC/UMS) in May 2018. During the period, the expanded waterway saw a total of 1,231 vessels transit its locks, according to the Panama Canal Authority (ACP). The container ship segment contributed highest tonnage with 36%, breaking its segment record with 13.8 million tons (PC/UMS) transited by 229 vessels.

ABB Turbocharging to Open Service Point at MMS Shipyard in Limassol
ABB Turbocharging has reached an agreement with Multimarine Services (MMS) to set up a turbocharging service point in Limassol, Cyprus, the first one to be located at a shipyard. Under the deal, signed during the Posidonia exhibition in Greece, an ABB Turbocharging Service Point will open at the MMS shipyard facility at Limassol Port.

Capesize bulk carrier coal fire, Italy
Coal in cargo hold of a capsize bulk carrier NBA VAN GOGH, docked at industrial zone of Torres Port, Sardinia, Italy, spontaneously ignited in the afternoon Jun 4. Bulk carrier is offloading coal since May 30, there are reportedly some 66,000 tons left in the holds. Fire said to be put under control, firefighters were to monitor temperature in holds throughout the night.

Keppel to Build LNG Bunkering Vessel for FueLNG
Keppel Offshore & Marine has secured a contract from FueLNG to build South East Asia s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel. The unit, valued at around SGD 50 million (USD 37.4 million), is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2020.
To feature a capacity of 7,500 cubic metres, the dual-fuel bunkering ship will be built to the MTD 7500U LNG design, for greener and safer bunkering activities within the Singapore port.

Container Volumes Rise by 45 Pct at King Abdullah Port
Saudi Arabian King Abdullah Port has achieved new heights in container handling this year, Rayan Qutub, CEO of the port, revealed. The port s container throughput increased by 45 percent during the first four months of 2018, compared to the same period a year earlier.
Qutub explained that the substantial increase will play an important role in promoting King Abdullah Port as a logistics hub strategically located on the Red Sea.

Tensions between U.S. and China to Cool Off
The ongoing trade tensions between the United Sates and China are expected to subside, and a solution will be hammered out, Panama Canal Administrator Jorge Quijano told World Maritime News on the sidelines of the Posidonia 2018 trade show in Athens.
To remind, in March 2018, the United States imposed tariffs of 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on aluminum. What is more the exemption of U.S. s long-term allies from the tariff, namely Europe, Canada and Mexico has expired, with the latter promising to retaliate.

ABS Offers Quantitative Cyber Risk Assessment for Marine Assets
ABS today announced its successful development of a groundbreaking new methodology to measure cyber security risk associated with operational technology, providing marine and offshore clients a calculated risk index for vessels, fleets and facilities. The index quantifies cyber security risk and gives owners and operators an actionable strategy to reduce cyber risk onboard a vessel.
Until now, cyber risk assessment methods were largely qualitative, characterizing risk based on threats, vulnerabilities and consequences. These elements were useful in understanding risk; however, they were not quantifiable.

Navarino to Introduce Intelsat Maritime Services in Q3
Navarino, a maritime technology company, has announced that it will add Intelsat services to its portfolio of connectivity solutions. Under the agreement between the two companies, Navarino will introduce Intelsat satellite services delivered from the IntelsatOne Flex platform to customers in the third quarter of this year. NUS Enterprise inks MOUs to expand support for Singapore startups
NUS Enterprise has penned four memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with four international partners, at the launch of a maritime-focused acceleration programme, that will expand the support extended to Singapore startups overseas.
The four international partners are startup hubs Innospace and Rainmaking Innovation, as well as Helsinki-headquartered equipment manufacturer, Wartsila, and Norway-based maritime group, Wilhelmsen.

Azerbaijan, Netherlands seeking to link each other s ports
Azerbaijan and the Netherlands are cooperating on development of the Baku Sea Trade Port and its connection with the Dutch ports, Ambassador of the Netherlands to Azerbaijan Onno Kervers told Trend.
"Representatives of specific hubs in the Netherlands study the ways to share expertise and would like to study the possibilities of connectivity together with the port of Alat. Presently they work on creation of the Netherlands-Azerbaijan business hub, trying to link the port Alat with the Dutch Greenport and port of Venlo," said Kervers.

Hamad Port steadily growing
Doha s Hamad Port, one of the largest of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region, has witnessed a significantly greater level of activities since the beginning of the economic blockade on Qatar by four countries on June 5, 2017.
Sources in the shipping industry said the port, which formally opened for operations with the arrival of a large 14,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) vessel belonging to the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in December 2016, has witnessed steep growth in the volume of containers handled.

Shippers Council stops new port charge introduced by shipping firms
The Nigerian Shippers Council, NSC, has ordered shipping companies to vacate the off-dock terminal charge of N70,000 per container which they introduced about a month ago.
Speaking to Vanguard in Lagos, Executive Secretary of the Council, Mr. Hassan Bello, said that the agency has met with one of the shipping companies, Mediterranean Shipping Company, MSC, to return to status quo. Bello said that the terminal charge was never discussed, neither was it approved by the Council.

APM Terminals Management: Uruguay approaches zero carbon emissions
APM Terminals Inland Services Uruguay (also known as Montevideo Port Services SA) switched on 648 solar panels this month, capable of producing 228.6 MWh per year, enough to meet up to 90% of the facilities entire annual consumption.
By switching to their own renewable energy source, Inland Services Uruguay, the largest equipment maintenance and repair provider in the country, will reduce its CO2 emissions by almost 50 tonnes per year. To put this in perspective, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency it would take around 1,300 seedling trees 10 years to absorb this amount of CO2.
