IMO : Governments Must Act To Bring Seafarers Home
Governments have the power to solve a growing humanitarian crisis and must take action to bring seafarers home and allow their relief crews to join ships. "Get our hero seafarers home" was the plea from panelists during a webinar (26 June) hosted by IMO on the occasion of the Day of the Seafarer. IMO, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) urged countries to implement protocols on safe crew change developed by the maritime industry and circulated by IMO.
The 2020 Day of the Seafarer campaign has highlighted the essential role of seafarers on the frontline of the global supply chain, while urging Governments to grant them key worker status so they are able to travel and transit to and from ships.Posted On:1-Jul-2020

Philippiines : 170 seafarers sent home for crew change.
Another fresh batch of Filipino merchant mariners due for crew change were sent out via chartered flight Sunday, June 28, organized by Peter Döhle Schiffahrts- KG, principal of Dohle Seafront (Manila) Inc. Lawyer Iris Baguilat, President of Dohle Seafront (Manila) Inc., said about 170 seafarers has left NAIA Terminal 1 7p.m.via Condor Air DE8587. She said the airline has arrived Saturday, June 27 and brought home some of their crew, and once again shared the seats for free to other seafarers and overseas Filipino workers who wanted to be repatriated but stranded for months in some ports and places in Europe. Philippine Church offers moral support to seafarers.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has urged Filipino seafarers to reach out, communicate and stay on course as the Philippines continues its fight with an economic recession.
In a pastoral letter issued for International Day of the Seafarer on June 25, the CBCP said the Church recognized their struggle amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The bishops also reminded them to have faith and courage in God and in themselves.
"These lockdowns, quarantines and closing of companies are added storms to our earthly journey. But remember, even if the waves are big and the winds are so strong, we have to raise our sail and keep our hands on deck," said the bishops.Posted On:1-Jul-2020

Foreign crew changes in Thailand possible.
Additional groups of foreigners will be allowed to enter Thailand from tomorrow (July 1), the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) announced on Monday (June 29).
There s one category of foreigners allowed to enter Thailand, which may embrace foreign crews and allow crew changes:

Global supply chains may collapse if crew-change crisis continues.
International Chamber of Shipping Chairman Esben Poulsson expressed gratitude about the cooperation between industry and social partners on the issue of crew changes. However, "government bureaucracy and a lack of political leadership has meant that 400,000 seafarers remain stranded, leaving the supply chains we rely upon at critical risk of collapsing", he said.
During Poulsson s keynote remarks at the opening of the Informa Markets Digital Maritime Week, he warned that "with some 400,000 seafarers still in need of crew change, the global supply chains and trade are under threat from the logjam caused by the inability to conduct crew exchanges in most countries".Posted On:1-Jul-2020

Nearly 300 Trinidadians disembarked Royal Caribbean s Enchantment of the Seas cruise ship Tuesday after three and a half months stuck at sea. But they won t be going home just yet.
A COVID-19 outbreak on the ship left the government scrambling to figure out how to handle the influx of returning citizens.
