Dubai has been selected as one of the world s top five shipping centers in the International Shipping Centre Development Index (ISCD).
With a number of initiatives focused on the maritime sector, innovative free zones, infrastructure and high maritime and logistics capabilities, Dubai aims to become a major global maritime destination.

Maersk Line Starts Digital Rate Distribution
Danish container shipping giant Maersk Line has gone live with digital, fully-automated distribution of its contract rates and amendments, CargoSphere said. The shipping company is now digitally distributing its rates to shippers, freight forwarders and NVOCC customers using CargoSphere electronic Smart Upload and Diagnostics Solution (eSUDS) and the CargoSphere Rate Mesh.
As explained, benefits of digital rate distribution include time and cost savings, improved data accuracy, online access to timely rates for better decision making, faster reconciliation of invoices and faster quoting to customers for freight forwarders and NVOCCs.

HMM s New Scrubber-Fitted Boxship Visits DP World Santos
HMM Promise, an 11,000 TEU containership completed in June, berthed at DP World Santos on August 17 on its maiden voyage to the Port of Santos in Brazil. DP World Santos is the country s largest private multimodal port terminal and has an annual capacity of 1.2 million TEU.
The newbuilding and its sister ship HMM Blessing were recently delivered to South Korean shipping company Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) from Hanjin Subic yard in the Philippines.

First North America-Built LNG Bunker Barge Delivered
US shipbuilder Conrad Industries has delivered the Clean Jacksonville, the first LNG bunker barge built in North America. The Clean Jacksonville, which was constructed at Conrad Orange Shipyard in Texas, conducted safe and successful gas trials in Port Fourchon, Louisiana.
The vessel will enter service for TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico in the Port of Jacksonville, where it will bunker two Marlin Class containerships operating on LNG fuel between Jacksonville and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

ESL Shipping Welcomes LNG-Fueled Bulker into Its Fleet
Finnish dry bulk shipping company ESL Shipping has taken delivery of LNG-fueled bulk carrier named Haaga. Thanks to the innovative technologies incorporated in the vessel s design, the 160-meter, 25,600 dwt vessel has had its carbon dioxide footprint cut by 50% when compared to the previous generation of vessels.

Luxury yacht with 300 kilo of cocaine intercepted, Dutch-German crew arrested
Luxury yacht HCH-X was intercepted by Spanish Customs patrol boat early in the morning Aug 19, 15 nm west of Ibiza, Balearic Islands, on a suspicion of drugs trafficking. Some 300 kilo of cocaine of 18 mil euro value were found, divided into two parts 150 kilo each, and hidden inside yacht s interior and Captain s cabin. Yacht 5 crew were arrested, 4 of them being Dutch, and 1 German nationality. Yacht was taken to Palma de Mallorca. Understood bales with high quality cocaine were picked up by yacht after they ve been dropped by a cargo ship. Investigation under way.

Cargo ship crew poisoned by fumigation, Ravenna
Four Albanian crew of a general cargo ship KRISTI I were taken to hospital at Ravenna, Italy, shortly after ship s arrival on Aug 20, with poisoning symptoms. Poisoning believed to be caused by cargo fumigation. The ship arrived from Split Croatia with cargo of grain.

Report: Shipping Emissions Declining but More Innovation Needed to Meet IMO Goals
Carbon dioxide emissions from 22 top ocean container carriers, representing 85 percent of global containerized shipping, continued to fall in 2017, BSR’s Clean Cargo Working Group said in a report.
However, more innovation and collaboration across the value chain is needed to achieve ambitious global climate goals, Clean Cargo pointed out.

Injured Crew Member Medevaced from DHT s VLCC
An injured crew member of a 332-meter long very large crude carrier (VLCC) DHT Lotus was medevaced on Friday night, August 17, 2018, while the vessel was passing along the South African coast.
A 38-year-old Indian crewman had to be medically evacuated to a hospital for an eye injury sustained from unknown causes, South African Sea Rescue Institute said. The ship was fully laden and heading for Singapore at the time.

GasLog Reveals LNG Carrier Order at SHI
Owner and operator of LNG carriers GasLog is behind the latest order at South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for two newbuilds. As World Maritime News reported earlier this morning, SHI has been hired to construct two 174,000 cubic meter LNG carriers with low pressure two stroke propulsion, with expected delivery in late 2020.
The newbuilding duo has been chartered by a wholly owned subsidiary of Cheniere Energy. Each vessel secured a charter for a firm period of seven years, GasLog said.

Vietnam Scraps Proposed My Xuan Port
Vietnam has decided to scrap the proposed $477m My Xuan port, citing delays in construction, according to official media. Developer Taiwan s Formosa International Development Corporation received the licence back in 2010. However, it was finding it difficult to raise funds, had not acquired the required land and had only completed the design, land survey and environmental impact assessment, official media said.

Start Of Patimban Construction Imminent
The construction of Indonesia s Patimban Port will start this month, Singaporean newspaper The Straits Times has reported. According to an article published on July 30, contracts for the $3bn, Japan-backed project were exchanged in Indonesian capital Jakarta at the end of July, with transportation minister Budi Karya Sumadi stating that the initiative will be crucial for easing goods movement within and over the nation’s border.

Maritime Association of Nationwide Shipping Agencies - India has welcomed the JNPT chairman s decision to levy penalty on defaulting stakeholders like terminal and train operators, Concor or shipping lines or agents that cause delay in dwell time.
The chairman in-charge at the meeting held last month on the subject had sought recommendations on the ICDs to be identified in the first phase for reduction of free period for import containers from 7 days to 3 days based on the feedback from CONCOR and other CTO’s.

Maersk and Vopak to launch 0,5% sulphur fuel bunkering facility in Rotterdam
A.P. Moller - Maersk and Royal Vopak, an independent tank storage operator active in the heart of Rotterdam s bunker environment, have agreed to this first joint initiative which will cater for circa 20% of Maersk global demand, enabling A.P. Moller - Maersk to deliver approximately 2.3mt per year.
As an anchor tenant in the modified facilities this agreement will enable Maersk, as well as any other interested third parties, to supply vessels trading with and inside Europe with compliant fuel.
