Maersk Line nominated at the European Digital Communications Award for its social media presence
Maersk Line's social media presence has been recognised by the European Digital Communications Awards and nominated for the award in the category 'Social Media Platforms'. The nominations were announced on July 30 2014 and the awards ceremony would be taking place in September 2015 in Berlin.
With over 2 million followers across a number of platforms, Maersk Line's social media is vital for communicating to a number of key audiences including our customers, the shipping industry, the media, Maersk Line employees and of course, our fans. Maersk Line has been lauded for its early adoption of social media - being the first shipping company and one of the first B2B brands to engage actively in the space. At European Digital Awards, Maersk Line's strategic change of focus from communications to commercial has been identified.
Davina Rapaport, Maersk Line's Pulse and Social Media Manager explains more, 'Maersk Line's new social media challenge has been to change the focus from communications to commercial and extract bottom line benefits from our social media channels, whilst never losing our community spirit'.
'Social media is a natural part of our marketing strategy and no longer a "nice to have". We have moved past simply accumulating followers to meeting our customers where they spend their time with meaningful messages which can effectively convert interest to business. We’re honoured that our social media presence has been recognised’ says Louisa Loran, Maersk Line's Global Head of Brands and Customer Insights.
'Maersk Line's various social media platforms have been curated to communicate to different audiences with different motivations for engaging with the company. LinkedIn has a strong industry and customer focus whereas channels such as Instagram are utilised more for communicating Maersk Line's brand proposition and engaging with our global workforce and the fans', Davina adds.
This is the second time that Maersk Line has been recognised for excellence in social media by the European Digital Communications Awards having previously won a similar award in 2012.

MSC celebrates special family christening for MSC Zoe on her maiden call at the port of Hamburg
The first weekend in August was a very special one for MSC who welcomed close to 400 guests in the port of Hamburg to celebrate the christening of MSC Zoe, the third of MSC’s supersize 'Oscar class' series of 19,224 TEU vessels. The vessel is named after the daughter of MSC Cruises Executive Chairman Mr. Pierfrancesco Vago and MSC Group CFO Mrs. Alexa Aponte Vago.
MSC Zoe made her way up the Elbe River on Saturday to the cheering of crowds from locals who lined the shores to greet the biggest containership in the world on her maiden call at Hamburg. The whole city was buzzing with the news of the arrival of MSC Zoe and everyone was thrilled to watch her manoeuvre gracefully into berth.
Sunday morning dawned bright and sunny over the port of Hamburg as special guests and their families arrived to join MSC in celebrating the traditional christening ceremony together with the Aponte-Vago family. After the traditional crest exchange ceremony Zoe joined her father, mother and brother Oliver on stage to present the bell to the ship's Master, Captain Domenico Pica. Father Georg Bergner performed the traditional blessing and wished well to the vessel, her crew and the MSC family. Captain Pica and his crew looked on proudly as four-year-old Zoe Vago cut the rope to break the champagne bottle against the ship as clouds of yellow and black confetti exploded into the air. VIP guests were invited to join the ribbon cutting ceremony on the bridge and Zoe herself took great delight in sounding the ship's horn.
There was something for everyone during the celebrations including live music, a Mediterranean-style buffet lunch, and even a bouncy castle and ice-cream for younger guests. MSC Zoe's christening was a truly memorable event, as much for the people of Hamburg as for the MSC family around the world.
On 2nd August 2015, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company christened the MSC Zoe. The vessel is named after the daughter of MSC Cruises Executive Chairman Mr Pierfrancesco Vago and MSC Group CFO Mrs Alexa Aponte Vago. The vessel was greeted by thousands of spectators who enjoyed glorious weather in the beautiful German city. MSC Zoe is the 3rd vessel to join MSC's 'Oscar class' behind MSC Oscar and MSC Oliver.

Sohar announces annual Summer Educational Programme
Sohar Port and Freezone is gearing up for the launch of its fourth annual Summer Educational Programme. The Programme is designed to help students in Sohar and the nearby province of Liwa to enhance their English and IT knowledge, arming them with vital skills that will help increase their employment prospects in the future. The Summer Educational Programme commences on August 1 and will last for two weeks.
This year's Programme is being held in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Sohar's neighbouring International Maritime College of Oman (IMCO). The Programme has helped almost a 1,000 local school students over the last three years. This year, 330 students aged 10 to 14 will be participating.
The Programme was launched four years ago to help augment participants' educational acumen and thus help them find employment in the future. The Programme aims to provide surrounding communities with the skills and income required to improve their own livelihoods and meet the development priorities outlined in the Oman government’s Economic Vision 2020.
Classes will take place at IMCO, a specialist education and training institute in Sohar, which offers Diploma and Degree Courses for the Maritime, Shipping, Port, Transport and Petrochemical Process industries.
Andre Toet, CEO of Sohar Port, said: "We are delighted to be running the Summer Educational Programme again this year and are very much looking forward to welcoming another group of ambitious, bright young people onto the Programme. Sohar is committed to creating opportunities for young people in the area and the Summer Educational Programme is just one small part of our wider plans to work with the local community to create a thriving region, in every way possible."
With global investments worth over $21 billion, more and more opportunities are emerging as the Port and adjacent Freezone continues to expand. Jamal Aziz, CEO of Sohar Freezone, commented: "Sohar is growing at an unprecedented rate, and this presents vast opportunities for young, local talent. The Summer Educational Programme is a fantastic opportunity to align our ambitions for the future with market trends and to involve up-and-coming young talents at an early stage; I cannot think of a better match."

Gadkari to represent India at new Suez Canal inauguration
Road Transport Highways and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari will represent India at the inaugural ceremony of new Suez Canal in Egypt on August 6, 2015.
Egypt president Abdel Fattah Al Sisi has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in the inauguration of the new Suez Canal, an official statement from Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said today.
"In view of India’s traditionally warm and friendly ties with Egypt and to re-enforce New Delhi's continued high-level engagement and political commitment to Egypt under Al Sisi government, the Prime Minister has nominated Gadkari to represent India at the event," the statement said.
Egypt late last month began the trial runs of new Suez canal ahead of the formal inauguration on August 6.
Dubbed as Suez Canal Axis, the 72-kilometre project is aimed at speeding up traffic along the existing waterway by reducing the waiting period of vessels, as well as boosting revenues for Egypt.
The project will run part of the way along the existing canal that connects Red Sea to the Mediterranean.
