Hughes India launches maritime mobility services
Hughes Communications India, a majority-owned subsidiary of Hughes Network Systems, launched commercial maritime mobility services in India. HCIL was the first to receive a Flight and Maritime Connectivity (FMC) license in India, which permits the company to provide mobility services within 125 kilometers of the Indian coastline. Now, as the first to offer satellite maritime services in India, HCIL enables connectivity to vessels sailing in domestic waters - as well as internationally - through roaming partnerships with select maritime providers.
Until now, ships entering Indian territorial waters were required to shut down their VSAT connections; now, they can connect to HCIL's Ku-band satellite network. This connectivity helps ensure that ships and their crews switch seamlessly to the HCIL network (much like terrestrial mobile roaming), with uninterrupted data and voice applications from the port of origin to the port of destination.
"Maritime operators in India - whether cruise lines, shipping companies or offshore oil operators - are eager to connect their vessels, crews and passengers with high-quality, satellite broadband - and we are ready to serve them today," said Partho Banerjee, president and managing director, Hughes Communications India Ltd. "We estimate that more than 500 Indian vessels will use Indian maritime services in the next three years to stay connected. Two customers have already signed on for our maritime mobility service offering."

PM to inaugurate India's second multi-modal terminal in Sahibganj
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate India's second multi-modal terminal built at Sahibganj in Jharkhand on Thursday, a government statement said.
This is the second of the three Multi Modal Terminals (MMTs) being constructed on river Ganga under Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP). Earlier, in November 2018, Modi had inaugurated the MMT at Varanasi.
he Rs 290 crore-multi-modal terminal at Sahibganj implemented by Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) will open up industries of Jharkhand and Bihar to the global market and provide Indo-Nepal cargo connectivity through waterways route, the statement issued on Tuesday said.
It will play an important role in transportation of domestic coal from the local mines in Rajmahal area to various thermal power plants located along National Waterway-1, the government said. Other than coal, stone chips, fertilisers, cement and sugar are also expected to be transported through the terminal.
The convergence of Road-Rail-River Transport at Sahibganj through the new multi-modal terminal will connect this part of the hinterland to Kolkata, Haldia and further to the Bay of Bengal. Sahibganj will also get connected to North-East States through Bangladesh by river-sea route.
While the current capacity of the terminal is 30 lakh tonnes per annum, the government has planned an investment of Rs 376 crores for capacity enhancement in Phase-II to 54.8 lakh tonnes per annum. The development in Phase II will be entirely made by the private concessionaire, under the public-private partnership mode.
The multi-modal terminal will also help to make direct employment of about 600 people and indirect employment of about 3000 people in the region, the statement added.
The MMTs are being built as part of the Jal Marg Vikas Project that aims to develop the stretch of River Ganga between Varanasi to Haldia for navigation of large vessels upto 1500- 2000 tonnes weight, by maintaining a drought of 2-3 metres in this stretch of the river and setting up other systems required for safe navigation.

NGO: Two More Workers Die at Alang Shipbreaking Beaches
Two workers have lost their lives in recent incidents on the shipbreaking beach of Alang, India, NGO Shipbreaking Platform said citing local media.
In late July, a 50-year-old worker dies after a metal plate fell on his head while he was working on a ship at the Priya Blue yard. He was transferred to the nearest hospital in bad condition and pronounced dead at arrival.
The second incident, that occurred on September 3, took another life and left one worker severely injured at Shree Ram yard due to an explosion during cutting operations. The accident is under police investigation.
"We expect transparency on the causes of these fatalities, and that both the yards and owners of the vessels upon which the accidents occurred are held to account," Ingvild Jenssen, Executive Director of the NGO Shipbreaking Platform, said.
Last year, at least 14 workers lost their life at the Alang shipbreaking yards. The exact number of fatalities is not available as local authorities do not share information - serious injuries are rarely recorded, and occupational diseases are not documented at all.
Both Priya Blue and Shree Ram plots were among the first yards to obtain the "Statements of Compliance with the Hong Kong Convention" from Japanese ClassNK.
The shipbreaking yards have applied to be included in the EU list of approved ship recycling facilities. They have been inspected by the European Commission to assess whether they comply with the requirements set in the EU Ship Recycling Regulation. Site inspection reports highlighting a series of deficiencies related to the cutting operations in the intertidal zone, downstream waste management, medical facilities and labour laws were published earlier this year.
As a consequence, the yards, despite significant pressure from industry stakeholders, were not included in the EU list of approved ship recycling facilities.
New inspections, also of additional yards, are expected to take place in the coming weeks, NGO Shipbreaking Platform noted.

UK Secures More Funding for Zero-Emissions Shipping Drive
The UK government is providing more funding for the development of new technology that would help bring the country closer to zero emission shipping.
Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani has committed a further GBP 1 million (USD 1.2 million) to fund new shipping technology projects through MarRI-UK, a consortium of maritime organisations.
MarRI-UK has already allocated GBP 1 million to support early stage clean maritime projects and the government is providing a further GBP 1 million for technology and innovation projects.
"The UK continues to lead the way on the global stage, playing a key role in reaching an international agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by at least 50% in 2050," Minister Nusrat Ghani said.
The government also announced a push to bring financiers and budding entrepreneurs together to help innovation flourish in the sector.
What is more, a new Green Finance for Maritime conference in Summer 2020 is to bring together representatives from the government, financial services and technology sector to build relationships and broker new deals.
"MarRI-UK is the first collaborative body in the sector that brings together expertise from all parts of the sector. We back decarbonisation by 2050 and by working collaboratively with government, we will achieve this," Sarah Kenny, Vice Chair of Maritime UK, said.
"Already across Britain we’re seeing promising progress: from hybrid ferries to hydrogen fuel, the sector is tackling the challenge head on."
Highlighted projects include hybrid ferries being used between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight and in Scotland. Additionally, shore-side electricity at Portsmouth, Fraserburgh and Brodick ports drives down emissions from running engines, while a project in Orkney is exploring how to directly inject hydrogen into the fuel supply of ferries, reducing Co2 emissions.
