India: SCI to start new vessel service to Maldives from Monday.
India s state-owned Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) will commence new direct vessel service to the Maldives from Monday, the company said.
It will be a container and break-bulk cargo service with the support of the country's shipping and external affairs ministry, the company said.
The maiden voyage by SCI, the country's largest shipping company operating one-third of India's shipping tonnage with annual revenue of 602 million U.S. dollars, will be flagged off from Tuticorin port - 586 km South of Bengaluru.

Shipping in the crosshairs of US sanctions.
Sanctions on trade have become a critical component in the toolkit of US foreign policy professionals, with the shipping business, at all levels, increasingly caught in the crosshairs.
The law firm Watson Farley Williams (WFW), a specialist in maritime law, in the first of a seven part series that will be examining how sanctions are applied to the maritime community, notes that: "The Trump Administration has dramatically expanded the use of secondary sanctions, re-imposing sanctions on Iran and targeting North Korea, Russia, Venezuela, Syria, terrorism and Hong Kong."

India: H K Joshi given temporary charge of India Ports Global overseeing Chabahar port.
The Shipping Ministry has entrusted Harjeet Kaur Joshi, chairperson and managing director of Shipping Corporation of India Ltd (SCI) with the additional role of managing director of India Ports Global Ltd, the state-owned entity tasked with developing and running the India-funded Chabahar port in Iran.
The three-month "temporary assignment" given to HK Joshi has baffled those tracking the strategic port venture, the first by a government-owned firm overseas, as it navigates the challenges surrounding the project after the United States re-imposed sanctions on the Persian Gulf nation, slowing down the progress of the port considerably.

Philippines: 2 survivors, kin of missing cattle ship crewmen to get full govt support - DOLE.
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) vowed to extend full support to the two rescued Filipino crewmen of the ill-fated cargo/cattle ship that sank off southern Japan earlier this month.
The same support will be extended to the families of the missing Filipino seafarers and the lone recovered fatality. "They will get help from the government in the form of livelihood assistance and other benefits," Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said in a statement Sunday.

India: Shipping industry records 9.7 percent increase in tonnage capacity.
Ministry of Shipping recently announced the growth rate of Indian industries. The data released by the Ministry stated that the tonnages of vessels under the Indian flag saw an increase of 9.7 per cent from 11.55 MT to 12.68 MT between March 2017 and March 2020.
The gains were largely led by a few important government initiatives intended towards incentivising the shipping sector.

UK: Freighter broke off moorings, blocked river.
General cargo ship ELISE broke off her fore moorings and was rotated across river Arun at Littlehampton, West Sussex, UK, English Channel, in the afternoon Sep 18. Ship s stern remained stationary at berth, her portside anchor was down, and she was in ballast. She blocked river, even kayaks couldn t pass her. Understood she was refloated at night same day, or early in the morning Sep 19, after tide changes, and as of 0300 UTC Sep 19, she was already back at berth.

VIKINGs ferry AMORELLA grounded to avoid sinking, passengers evacuation
VIKING LINE ro-pax ferry AMORELLA contacted bottom at around 0940 UTC Sep 20 in Aland islands waters, west of Turku, Finland, while en route from Turku to Stockholm, with 207 passengers and 74 crew on board. Understood the ship had to intentionally run aground on one of archipelago s island coast, in order to "stabilize the vessel". Probably, or highly likely, her hull was breached with ensuing water ingress, and danger of losing stability.

KR issues world s first cyber security class notation to HHI for very large LPG carriers.
The Korean Register (KR, Chairman & CEO, LEE Hyung-chul) has presented Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) with the world’s first Cyber Security (CS Ready) class notation for a very large liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier.
The presentation took place at KR s Headquarters in Busan on 18 September, in the presence of Hyundai LNG Shipping (HLS, President & CEO, LEE Kyu-bong), Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI, President & CEO, HAN Young-seuk) and, Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE, CEO, KWON Oh-gap).
