Panama Canal sees 1% rise in tonnage in FY2020 .
The Panama Canal closed its 2020 fiscal year with an annual tonnage up % at 475.1m Panama Canal tonnes (PC/UMS) up 1% compared to FY2019, despite in the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Panama Canal ended its fiscal year (October 2019-September 2020) with 13, 369 transits, a 2% reduction compared to projections, while the 475.1m tonnes PC/UMS represent a 4% drop, compared to projections. India: Sailing vessels hit by newly begun cargo service to Maldives.
The launch of cargo ferry service from India (Tuticorin and Kochi) to Maldives on September 21 has hit operation of sailing vessels from Tuticorin ferrying cargo between the two countries. India: JNPT Port attains 95% of cargo throughput as compared to September 2019.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), handled a noteworthy 3,80,384 TEUs in September 2020, which is 95% of cargo handled in September 2019 (400,365 TEUs).

More action needed for seafarers, collateral victims of measures to curb COVID-19
In all, some 400,000 people are currently stranded on vessels, and a similar number are prevented from returning to ships, either to earn their living or to return home, due to COVID-19 restrictions on travel and transit.

Ship held in Aberdeen harbour amid welfare concerns.
The Maltese registered ship, which is owned by Indian oil and gas firm Global Offshore Services, was seized by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) yesterday.
According to a trade union inspector, of the 24 Indian nationals that make up the boat's full time crew, 10 have returned home while 14 remain on-board.
