UK: National Minimum Wage For Seafarers.
The UK s National Minimum Wage (Offshore Employment) (Amendment) Order 2020 (the Order) came into force on 1 October 2020, widening the scope and application of the National Minimum Wage Act 1998 and extending its provisions to individuals in "offshore employment" who are working, or who ordinarily work, in the territorial waters of the United Kingdom. The Order also applies to those individuals on ships engaged in activities connected with the exploration of the sea-bed or subsoil, or the exploitation of their natural resources, in the UK sector of the continental shelf.

Ro-Ro ready for operation between Willingdon Island and Bolghatty Island.
The alternative method to transport containers the cost-effective and environment-friendly way is to resume their transit in lorries on the waterway route from Willingdon Island to Bolghatty Island. While lorries have to travel over 40 km through congested roads, the waterway is less than 3 km long.
In order to facilitate the plan, the Cochin Shipyard had recently built a pair of roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) vessels for the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).

Developing Mega Container Port in Saudi Arabia.
Efforts are proceeding to develop Saudi Arabia s King Abdulaziz Port Dammam (KAPD) into a mega container terminal and regional hub for shipping. Less than six months after signing a 30-year Build, Operate and Transfer ("BOT") agreement operations of the two container terminals was transferred from the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) to the newly established Saudi Global Ports Company (SGP), which will oversee the expansion of the terminal operations. Singapore's PSA is an investor in the new project.

ITF disabled Filipino bulk carrier in Estonia
Filipino bulk carrier NORD SANTIAGO was detained by Estonian Maritime Authorities on request of Estonian Seamen trade union inspector and ITF representative, one Jaanus Kuiv, who found, that employment contracts of all 18 crew were expired. The ship berthed at Muuga (Tallinn) on Oct 4, on arrival from Senegal via Norway. Owner is requested to carry out crew change. Foreign crew change in Estonia is allegedly possible, but who knows though, if it s possible in real life, for all-Filipino crews, both off and on signers.

Bulk carrier aground, Columbia river UPDATE refloated
Oct 8 UPDATE: Was refloated at around 1500 UTC Oct 8, moved upstream to reportedly, Kalama, understood for inspection. No information on damages.
Bulk carrier OTZIAS ran aground below Longview, Columbia river, at around 2030 UTC Oct 7, while proceeding downstream, en route from Vancouver to Port Angeles, USA. As of 0330 UTC Oct 8 was still aground, with at least 2 tugs at her side. Understood the ship is partially in load.

Container ship stuck in ice, drifting Greenland
Container ship MALIK ARCTICA is stuck in ice off her port of destination Ittoqqortoormiit, southeast Greenland, since Oct 7. The ship is to offload winter supplies at Ittoqqortoormiit, so now she has to wait for ice condition improvement. As of 0530 UTC Oct 8, the ship was still in ice, probably drifting with ice floe in eastern direction, or trying to free herself.

Vizag Port registers 11% growth in cargo handling.
Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has registered an all-time record of handling over 72.72 million metric tonnes cargo for the fiscal 2019-20, Chairman K Rama Mohana Rao said here on Tuesday.
Speaking to the media, the VPT Chairman said it was achieved against 65.30 million tonnes handled in 2018-19, recording a growth of 11 per cent. He said there will be a fierce competition with the private ports for the next three to four years.

SIFAX Group opens new terminal in Lagos to combat port access problem.
SIFAX Group, a conglomerate with investments in Maritime, Aviation, Logistics, Oil & Gas, Hospitality and Financial Services sectors, has opened a new container terminal in Lagos as a response to the difficulties experienced by stakeholders in accessing the Lagos ports.
Speaking at the formal commissioning of the facility situated along the Ebute Metta Creek, Ijora, Lagos, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, Group Executive Vice Chairman, SIFAX Group, said the company decided to invest in the facility to make the process of cargo clearing a wonderful experience as opposed to what is obtainable currently.

GSM to start terminal operations at Port of New Orleans.
The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) and Gulf Stream Marine (GSM) announced that GSM will begin operations at Alabo Street Wharf as a new Port NOLA tenant.
"Gulf Stream Marine is highly respected for their operational expertise with breakbulk, bulk and heavy-lift cargo, and they are a welcome addition to our tenant portfolio," said Brandy D. Christian, president and ceo of Port NOLA and ceo of the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad.
