Mystery of bulk carrier stranded in Solomon Islands waters
Bulk carrier SERENITY 1 was reported stranded for three weeks already by local residents of Makira Island, Solomon Islands, who complained to the authorities, that the vessel is an obstacle and leaking oil, demanding it to be removed. Solomon Islands SIBC (Voice of The Nation) News Agency says the vessel is “a wreck”.

Nigerian pirates attack container ship VIDEO
Crew member of a Singapore-flagged container ship made a video of pirates attack on Dec 7 south of Nigerian port Onne, Bight of Bonny, Gulf of Guinea. Name of the ship wasn’t revealed. The ship thwarted attack thanks to barbed wire fencing, speed and maneuvering. At one moment, 4 signal rockets were fired in the direction of pirates boat. Two-engines boat was carrying 8 pirates, armed with AK 47 assault rifles, and a ladder with a hook. Pirates gave up and turned away after about an hour’s chase.

Ferry STENA FLAVIA troubled, taken off service
Ferry STENA FLAVIA encountered engine problem after leaving Nynashamn, Sweden, in the morning Dec 11, bound for Ventspils Latvia. Ferry was taken to Sodertalje port, Sweden. Reportedly she was towed, but according to track, she managed to reach Sodertalje under own power. Repairs may take some three days.

Freighter aground, Taiwan
General cargo ship FUCHUN 688 on Dec 8 ran aground on a coast in Changhua city area, central Taiwan, Taiwain Strait. Understood refloating delayed until all fuel, some 4 tons, will be siphoned, in order to avoid possible pollution, with ship’s hull probably being breached. 8 crew, including Chinese Master and 7 Indonesians, is safe. Hong Kong based shipowner is to come to Taiwan to coordinate salvage plan with maritime officials. Reportedly, FUCHUN 688 was beached in stormy weather, being unable to hold against heavy swell.
