The robot that could help make the shipping industry greener
When a ship sails through the sea, barnacles, mussels, algae, and other organisms stick to the hull of the vessel. This process is called biofouling - and it's a big problem for the shipping industry.
Biofouling increases the drag of ships, so more energy is needed to power them, increasing fuel costs and multiplying their carbon emissions.

India: JNPT drives for growth amid Covid-crisis.
Indias major port in Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has bucked the countrys container volume trend with a substantial increase in container throughput by both weight and TEU.
JNPT recorded an overall 9.04% of container growth at 5.70 million tonnes in November 2020 compared to 5.22 million tonnes in November last year.

JNPT and Port of Antwerp launch online course in break bulk handling.
JNPT, the countrys premier container port, on Wednesday announced the launch of an online course in break bulk handling in collaboration with the second-largest port in the Europes Port of Antwerp.
Designed after extensive consultations with the ports and the other stakeholders, the course has been launched amid an increasing demand for upgraded skills for port-led development, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) said in a release.

Container Mafia driving up shipping costs in China
China became the first country in the world to open up factories on a large scale, setting its enormous industrial engine on the run, with the hopes of reaching pre-pandemic level production. Things seemed to be on track until container shortages came into the scene.

Coastal freighter attacked, 8 crew kidnapped, Gulf of Guinea
General cargo ship STEVIA was attacked and boarded by pirates sometime between 0500-0530UTC Dec 16 in Gulf of Guinea southwest of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, see map. 8 crew reportedly, were kidnapped. STEVIA resumed sailing at around 0730 UTC at a reduced speed, was adrift at 1100 UTC, probably waiting for assistance. The ship was re-flagged in May 2020 and most likely, is operated and owned by local company.

Aframax tanker disabled by fire in engine room - UPDATE
December 16 UPDATE: MARQUESSA was taken on tow by offshore tug PUSH OSPREY (IMO 9658264) on Dec 12-13, to be towed to Manila, ETA Dec 17. As of 0500 UTC Dec 16, caravan was sailing off central Luzon western coast.
Dec 13 UPDATE: Tanker was taken on tow by salvage tug SALVAGE CHAMPION (IMO 7530444), understood to be towed to Singapore.

Cargo ship contacted pier, both damaged, Kalimantan
General cargo ship LIMA VALERIE contacted pier in Kapuas river Delta, western Kalimantan, Indonesia, downstream from Pontianak Port, at around 0500 LT (UTC +7) Dec 16. Circumstances of an accident unclear, the ship could be either leaving Wajok Hilir Village, or berthing, or the village. Pier suffered considerable damages, ship’s bow said to sustain damages, too.
