Australian Port Quarantines After Livestock Carrier Arrives with COVID
Despite increased precautions and protocols, ports are still challenged to control the spread of the COVID-19 from arriving ships. In the latest example, port employees in Darwin, Australia have been placed in quarantine after a potential exposure to the virus.
Heath Authorities for the Northern Territory in Australia reported that a 25-year-old crew member on board a livestock carrier named the Diamantina had tested positive for the virus after the ship arrived on the evening of December 27 from Indonesia

India: Cargo traffic at ports may decline by 10 pc this fiscal: Report
Cargo traffic at domestic ports is expected to shrink about 10 per cent this fiscal owing to significant under-performance in the first half of the fiscal even the October-March period is expected to put up a better show in terms of volumes, a report said on Tuesday.
The ports for the first time after seven months reported a positive growth in the months of October and November when the cargo traffic went up by 3 per cent and 1 per cent, year-on-on-year, respectively, ratings agency Icra NSE -1.29 % said in a release.

India: EoI invited for greenfield deep sea port in West Bengal
The West Bengal government has called for expressions of interest (EoI) from global agencies to set up a deep-sea port in Public-Private Partnership in East Midnapore at Tajpur.
Located, nearly 200 kms from Kolkata, the Tajpur port is expected to boost the economy of the region and generate about 25,000 jobs.

India: New Mangalore Port handles 25.53 mt cargo till December 29.
New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) handled 25.53 million tonnes (mt) of cargo till December 29 of 2020-21 as against 27.23 mt in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, recording a decline of 6.2 per cent.
Addressing the media in Mangaluru on Tuesday, AV Ramana, Chairman, NMPT, said that Covid affected the major captive cargoes of NMPT - crude oil and POL (petroleum, oil and lubricants) - during the financial year.

Disabled container ship to be towed to Reykjavik
Container ship LAGARFOSS was disabled after engine failure on Dec 27 in North Atlantic, while en route from Reykjavik to Halifax, Canada. Icelandic CG ship THOR (IMO 9426893) responded, as of 0230 UTC Dec 29 she was already at LAGARFOSS side, busy with taking her on tow. LAGARFOSS reportedly is to be towed back to Reykjavik, ETA Jan 01.

General cargo ship ran onto embankment during Kiel Canal transit
General cargo ship DAMINA ran onto embankment while transiting Kiel Canal direction in western direction, at 1246 UTC Dec 27, at kilometer 29 mark. The ship was taken off embankment 4 hours later with tug assistance, and reached Brunsbuettel, where she sho was stopped for inspection. She left Brunsbuettel early in the morning Dec 28, continuing her voyage from S-Petersburg Russia to Sevilla Spain.

Cargo ship grounded by storm in Yantai, China
Cargo ship DA FENG 6, anchored at inner Yantai (China, Yellow sea) anchorage to shelter from storm, broke off her anchor, drifted and ran onto port embankment at around 0500 Beijing time, Dec 29. 8 crew left the ship, she s to be refloated after weather improves.

Tanker aground north of Londonderry
Product tanker THUN LIFFEY reportedly ran aground at Lough Foyle mouth, Northern Ireland, at around 0900 UTC Dec 29, while en route from Londonderry to Milford Haven. Tanker is in ballast, as of 1230 UTC was still aground, with tugs at her side. She s expected to be refloated in the afternoon Dec29, probably with high water.

Cargo ship avoided seemingly inevitable grounding
General cargo ship CDRY BLACK barely avoided grounding on Dec 28 when stormy winds battered Dalmatian area, northern Adriatic sea. The ship reportedly, broke off her moorings at Koromacno port, Croatia, northeast of Pula, but managed to get under way and escape seemingly inevitable grounding. Hail to crew and their seamanship.
