India: Three new ports to boost maritime trade
The State government's plan to construct landlord ports at Bhavanapadu (Srikakulam district), Ramayapatnam (Prakasam) and Machilipatnam (Krishna) is intended to give further boost to the maritime trade being largely done now by the States only major port at Visakhapatnam and the thriving private ports at Krishnapatnam (Nellore), Gangavaram (Visakhapatnam) and Kakinada (East Godavari).

Rs 1,500 crore contraband seized in Indian waters last year, says Maritime force
Ahead of its 45th Raising Day on February 1, the Indian Coast Guard on Sunday said that despite the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, it maintained a round-the-clock vigil in the Exclusive Economic Zone with the help of about 50 ships and 12 aircraft daily.

Nigeria: We will rescue seafarers, NIMASA DG assures Turkish envoy
The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Bashir Jamoh, has assured the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Melih Ulueren, of the safe return of the 15 Turkish seafarers kidnapped onboard a Liberian Flagged Vessel.
The Liberian-flagged vessel was headed to Cape Town from Lagos when it was attacked in the Gulf of Guinea, 160 kilometres off Sao Tome Island, on January 23, 2021, by pirates.

Seafarer Commits Suicide Aboard Asphalt Tanker off UAE
On January 28, a seafarer who had spent 13 months aboard the asphalt tanker Sea Princess committed suicide, according to charity Human Rights at Sea (HRAS).
The Indian-owned tanker had recently been sold to a scrapyard in Alang and was under way in the Gulf of Oman, HRAS reported.

US: CDC will require everyone to wear face masks on cruise ships
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) passed a new order that requires people to wear masks on public transportation.
"Persons must wear masks over the mouth and nose when traveling on conveyances into and within the United States. Persons must also wear masks at transportation hubs as defined in this Order."

Maritime body MUI urges Indian shipping ministry to take cognisance of Neptune Declaration
Maritime body MUI on Sunday urged the government to take cognisance of Neptune Declaration on Seafarer Wellbeing and Crew Change in the formulation of Maritime India Vision 2030.
The Neptune declaration primarily focuses on recognising seafarers as key workers by all governments worldwide. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways of India will be formulating Maritime India Vision .

Cargo ship grounded by strong wind, Istanbul
General cargo ship STREAMLINE was pushed aground on a breakwater by strong wind in Zeytinburnu anchorage area, Istanbul, Marmara sea, on Jan 29. Understood the ship was anchored, probably in a lay-up, because there’s no AIS since Oct 2020. The ship is to be refloated by tug.

Russian cargo ship collided with lighthouse and breakwater, Scotland
General cargo ship MEKHANIK PUSTOSHNYY contacted outer breakwater and lighthouse while leaving Burnitsland, Scotland, Firth of Forth, on Jan 28. Both breakwater and lighthouse lantern sustained damages. The ship was stopped, but allowed to continue voyage after inspection, which understood, didn t find any serious damages. The ship is en route to Arkhangelsk Russia.

Hong Kong port eases Tsing Ma Bridge restrictions
A new maritime shortcut will now connect the Chinese industrial hubs of Hong Kong and Shenzhen. The move aims to attract some 20 percent more container ships to call at Hong Kong, posing it to be the premium transshipment hub in all of Asia.

UPDATE: Cargo ship attacked in Gulf of Guinea, USA bulk carrier
Cargo ship was attacked by pirates at around 0430 UTC Jan 30 in Gulf of Guinea south of Lome Togo. Ships tracks in the area point to bulk carrier ROWAYTON EAGLE. She was en route from Canary Islands to Lagos Nigeria, stopped and then began to loop around on Jan 27, most likely waiting out until receiving ok to proceed to Lagos port. As of 0600 UTC Jan 30, she was either drifting or moving dead ahead in attack area.

Two cargo ships collided, one in danger of sinking, abandoned
Two Chinese cargo ships, DE XING 9 and SHUN XING LUN, collided at around 1100 Beijing time Jan 30 in Macao harbor, DE XING 9 sustained serious hull portside and aft damages and suffered water ingress, all 12 crew were evacuated. It is reported, that the ship sank, but according to AIS and photos, she s afloat. SHUN XING LUN sustained some damages, but reportedly, not serious, and as of 2030 Beijing time, was near collision site.
