Yara Steps Up Plans for Green Ammonia as a Bunker Fuel
Longtime fertilizer manufacturer Yara is stepping into the nascent low-carbon ammonia sector, announcing a new division focused on green ammonia as a marine fuel and fertilizer.
"I am pleased to announce we are taking further steps to enable the hydrogen economy, establishing a new global unit - Yara Clean Ammonia - to capture growth opportunities within carbon-free food solutions, shipping fuel and other clean ammonia applications, leveraging Yara’s unique existing positions within ammonia production, trade and shipping," said Svein Tore Holsether.

Maritime company employee sentenced after stealing $7 million
Deepak "Jack" Jagtiani was sentenced to more than five years in prison for embezzling over $7 million from a Metairie, Louisiana-based marine cargo company and for defrauding the government of over $1 million in income taxes.
Jagtiani, 61, who was facing a maximum of 20 years in prison when he was indicted last year, admitted that he used his authority as the comptroller of Dan-Gulf Shipping Inc. to pay himself excessive salaries and benefits from the company between 2009 and 2019.

Cyprus calls for global approach to seafarer vaccinations
With the need to class seafarers as key workers gaining support, Cyprus has gone one step further in suggesting the foundation of a feasible solution to inoculations.
Cyprus Deputy Minister for Shipping, Vassilios Demetriades has written to the EU Transport and Health Commissioners and The IMO secretary-general Kitack Lim, outlining the two strands of the proposed programme and emphasising "the need for a practical, feasible and collective approach to addressing the issue of seafarer inoculations".

Captain and Officers of MSC Opera to be Jailed Over 2019 Accident
The criminal case stemming from a 2019 accident in which the cruise ship MSC Opera hit a river cruise ship and the dock while arriving in Venice has been concluded with an agreement that will see jail time for the captain and crew blamed for the accident.

Singapore conducts one-time Covid-19 test sweep on all harbour craft crew
The 825 crew had undertaken crew change between 17 December 2020 and 13 January 2021, with the one-time testing operation having started on 27 January and completed on 5 February.
"The harbour craft sector plays an important role in supporting operations in the port of Singapore. It provides transport, towage and bunkering services, as well as transports stores to ships in the port," MPA stated.

Canada bans cruises until 2022, blocking Alaska trips
Canada is extending its ban on cruise ships through February 2022 because of Covid-19, effectively shutting down popular summer trips to Alaska for another year.
The prohibition will allow authorities to focus on the rollout of the coronavirus vaccine and limit the spread of new variants, the government said in a statement Thursday.

U.S: Maritime sector nervous about chances for COVID-19 relief
U.S. ports and terminal operators hope a last-ditch effort on Capitol Hill will send emergency funding their way as lawmakers put the final touches on the next COVID-19 relief package.
Such relief has so far eluded the maritime sector, which has been frustrated watching other transportation modes such as public transit and the airlines get billions of dollars from the previous two COVID-19 relief bills signed during the Trump administration.

Container ship fire, Hamburg
Fire erupted in engine room of container ship VERA RAMBOW in the morning Feb 8, shortly after the ship left Hamburg container terminal. Master iformed authorities, crew tried to extinguish fire by own means, while fire boat and tugs immediately responded. VERA RAMBOW was towed to Kohlbrand and berthed.

Iran backed rebels interfere with UN mission to save decaying tanker
FSO SAFER has been in the news lately. The reason: IMO s assessment concluded with high oil spill risk from the decaying oil tanker.
Iran backed Houthi rebels control Yemen s Northwestern coastline. All efforts made by the UN to assess and stabilize the deteriorating FSO has been postponed due to the rebels.

Another Greek tanker attacked, boarded in Gulf of Guinea
Greek product tanker MARIA E was attacked and boarded at 1220 UTC Feb 9 northwest of Sao Tome and Principe, while en route from Lome, Togo. Ship s AIS according to available AIS providers, was off since tanker left Lome, in the morning Feb 8. No other information available at the moment, awaiting updates.
