Lebanese car carrier seized in Italy, suspect in arms trafficking
Lebanese car carrier BANA is in detention in Genoa, Italy, since Feb 2, suspect in arms trafficking from Turkey to Libya. The ship came into light earlier, she was spotted by French Navy in Libyan waters, escorted by Turkish Navy frigates. Libyan National Army Command issued a statement, accusing the ship in illegal transportation of arms, including tanks and armored cars, from Turkey to Libya. Ship s voyages records were tampered with, Italian authorities believe there at least three trips from Turkey to Libya.

Italian ferry hit rock, sustained 8-meter underwater gash
MOBY s ferry GIRAGLIA, connecting Gallura Sardinia, and Bonifacio Corsica, Italy, struck underwater rock while leaving Gallura on Feb 6, and sustained underwater 8-meter long gash with ensuing water ingress. The ship had passengers and vehicles on board, but luckily, situation remained under control. GIRAGLIA was anchored at Gallura entrance, and as of 1400 UTC Feb 7, remained at anchor. Understood passengers were taken to port.

COSCO, OOCL, ONE and Yang Ming to Set Up New Transatlantic Service
Asian shipping giants COSCO Shipping Lines, Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Yang Ming are to launch a new weekly Transatlantic service, the new East Mediterranean - America service (EMA).
As informed, the first voyage is scheduled for April 2020, subject to FMC filing.
To be jointly operated by the four lines, the service will deploy six Panamax vessels.

TOP Ships Offloads Two More Tankers
Greek tanker owner and operator TOP Ships has entered into agreements to dispose of an MR2 tanker pair.
As informed, the ships, Stenaweco Elegance and Eco Palm Desert, have been sold to unaffiliated third parties.
"The sales are subject to customary closing conditions and are anticipated to be concluded within the first quarter of 2020," TOP Ships said in a statement.

Maersk Line Partners Up with Hamburg s Software Company
Danish container shipping giant Maersk Line is partnering with Portrix Logistic Software GmbH (PLS), part of Hamburg-based IT solutions provider Portrix Group, to integrate spot pricing into PLS Global Price Management (GPM) software solution.
GPM, launched by PLS in 2010, is used by the freight forwarding industry, with twelve of the top twenty global freight forwarders currently utilizing the platform.

Russia Gives Green Light for New LNG Transshipment Terminal
Russia s federal autonomous institution Glavgosexpertiza has reviewed and approved the design documentation and engineering survey results for the construction of an LNG transshipment terminal in the Kamchatka Territory.
Back in October 2017, the Kamchatka government and PJSC Novatek signed an agreement aimed at developing a sea terminal on the southeast coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula.

2nd mega-container port at Maharashtra s Wadhavan, after JNPT
Maharashtra will get another huge port built at a cost of around Rs 65,545 crore at Wadhavan, near Dahanu in Palghar district on the Gujarat border, catapulting India among countries with top 10 container ports in the world, an official said here on Wednesday.
The proposal to make the huge port - on a landlord model - was cleared at a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.

Digitalisation Mishandling Poses Control Risk
A new report on digitalising the port call process has said that there is a challenge for current stakeholders in the maritime sector to implement digitalisation and to adopt common, interoperable data standards or to risk losing control in the logistic chain.
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) report includes analysis of the complexity of port call operations, how roles are likely to change and evolve with digitalisation and the role of maritime authorities in collaborative data sharing, current and future digital solutions and PortCDM.

Port of Durban stuck in the doldrums
Figures for 2019, just completed, don t make for encouraging reading and while lots can be read into these statistics, the cold reality is that they are a reflection of an economy that is sitting still - not quite going backwards as yet, but hardly advancing either.
As for the country s two principal ports, Durban and Richards Bay, they are less than encouraging.

Minister for Ports opens expansion of world-class Australia Ship Simulation Centre
The Western Australian Minister for Ports, the Hon. Alannah MacTiernan MLC opened the expanded facilities of HR Wallingford s state-of-the-art Australia Ship Simulation Centre yesterday.
HR Wallingford has added two new purpose-built simulators to its world-leading centre in Fremantle, bringing the total number of simulators that it owns and operates there to six.

Shipowners taking safe stevedoring on board seriously
As recently as two years ago, the estimated number of preventable deaths by dockworkers registered by the International Transport Federation stood at fifty worldwide. Between January 2018 and May 2019 ITF calculate at least sixteen dock workers and twelve seafarers have lost their lives in a confined-space related accident. The latter marks a noticeable increase considering the fact that a total of 145 casualties over the last twenty years have been reported.
