HPH Trust expects 2% Cargo Volume s Drop From A Potential Trade War
Revenue and other income for the quarter was HK$2,667.3 million, HK$89.3 million or 3.5% above last year. Combined container throughput of HIT(a), COSCO-HIT(b) and ACT(c) (collectively "HPHT Kwai Tsing") was 1.0% above last year, mainly due to the increase in transshipment cargoes. The container throughput of YICT(d) increased by 8.7% as compared to the same quarter in 2017, primary driven by the growth in empty and transshipment cargoes. Average revenue per TEU for Hong Kong and China were below last year, mainly attributed to certain revisions to tariffs following the M&A of some liners in 2 nd half of 2017. In addition, China s average revenue per TEU was also adversely impacted by unfavourable transshipment mix, but partially offset by RMB appreciation.

Brazil vessel lineup for sugar 60 pct below same period last year
The lineup of vessels to load sugar in Brazil currently is around 60 percent smaller than seen in the same period a year earlier because of lower output and tepid foreign demand, midway through the first month of the country s new cane crop. Ten vessels were at Brazilian ports in the first week of April to load 393,500 tonnes of sugar, according to data from shipping agency Williams. At this time last year, 23 ships were at port to take on 950,400 tonnes.

Fire on Korean fishing vessel in Timaru could be extinguished soon
The clean up plan for the burnt out fishing vessel in Timaru s port is unclear but at least Environment Canterbury (ECan) ratepayers now know they won t be footing any of the bill.
The 70-metre Dong Won 701 caught fire about 9.30pm on April 9, and was still burning over the weekend with Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) crew members attending. As a result of the fire, ECan declared a Tier 2 emergency response under the Maritime Transport Act 1994, which allows it to manage the potential risk of oil or other contaminants getting into the harbour water.

For The First Time, Maritime Shipping Has A Climate Target
When the European Union readied its Emissions Trading System a decade ago, the idea was to include sea and air transport in the scheme - for all ships and planes entering EU territory. But after an outcry from non-EU countries, Brussels said it would back off as long as the international organisations overseeing sea and air transport came up with a global climate solution.

New maritime traffic technologies in the works to cut risk of collisions
With the Singapore port being a busy one where a ship arrives or leaves every two to three minutes, new technologies are being developed to improve congestion forecasts and minimise collisions. The goal is to enhance navigational safety, for instance, through technologies that can predict and issue early warnings on the risk of collision, using technologies such as prediction or risk calculation models.
