Cargo ship sank in harbor, Vietnam
General cargo ship TUAN TU 08 (Ex - MINH PHAT 09) loaded with stone reportedly sank in Vinh Tan Port, Binh Thuan Province, southeast Vietnam, in the evening Apr 26. The ship left the port earlier this day but had to return, reporting unidentified trouble – cargo shift or water ingress, most probably. The ship sank in harbor, crew safe.Posted On:28-Apr-2020

With significant pile ups at ports, major container shipping lines start skipping India
A number of major global container shipping lines have started skipping country’s up container gateways, following the disruption caused at the major ports by the lockdown imposed by the Centre to check the spread of COVID-19. But this has not affected the number of commercial ships moving in the shipping lanes of the Indian ocean, which continue at the earlier levels of 11,000 to 12,000 ships at any given time.
Major global container shipping lines, which include Maersk Line, Hapag-Lloyd, CMA-CGM and China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO), are reported to have begun completely skipping the country’s top container gateways, including the state-owned Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust and Chennai port, and the Adani-operated Mundra port, industry players confirmed to The Indian Express.
“Due to the significant reduction in demand, we will be having blank sailings (sailings canceled by the carrier) from West Asia/Indian subcontinent to Europe and Mediterranean … and vice-versa,” said Maersk Line, the world’s biggest container liner, in a customer advisory dated April 3. Seafarers and climate change - key issues highlighted during IMO virtual meeting - PortNews IAA
The challenges faced by seafarers during the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to keep on track with IMO’s work to combat climate change were two key issues highlighted during a virtual meeting organized by IMO (23 April), to brief permanent representatives and liaison officers from 78 IMO Member States and one Associate Member, IMO said in its release.
IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim thanked Member States for detailing their arrangements to address the fallout of the pandemic, in particular concerning extending seafarers’ certificates, in notices that are made available on the IMO website.
He highlighted the need for seafarers to be designated as keyworkers and appealed to all permanent representatives and liaison officers to convey this message to their governments. The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) are calling on seafarers around the world to sound their ships horns at 12 noon local time International Workers Day on 1 May.
The sounding of ships horns will be to recognise the 1.6m seafarers across the world who are unsung heroes of global trade who are keeping countries supplied amidst the COVID-19 global pandemic.
Guy Platten, secretary general of the ICS said, “Our seafarers are the unsung heroes of global trade and we must not forget the contribution that they are making every day to keep our countries supplied with the goods that we need. The sounding of a ships’ horn in ports on the day that the world recognises the contribution of workers is an ideal way to remind us all of their sacrifice. They are all Heroes at Sea.”

Crew managers attempting to repatriate or relieve seafarers are facing a number of challenges, and these may be the tip of the iceberg for the shipping industry, according to crewing specialist Henrik Jensen.
A number of companies and maritime organisations have joined forces to investigate how crew changes can be made possible during the Covid-19 pandemic, said Mr Jensen, founder of Danica Crewing Services which has offices in Hamburg, Ukraine, Russia and Latvia. However, global travel restrictions and quarantine requirements are proving difficult to overcome.
Part of the problem is that each country has its own version of measures in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. “At present every country has its own set of rules. As a collective industry we now have work in progress to set-up an industry standard on how joining seafarers should be tested and stay in self-isolation before travelling etc,” Mr Jensen explained. “This has two purposes: to develop a common standard policy which, if followed, would allow seafarers to cross borders and move to their vessels, and to reduce the risk to existing crew members of bringing the virus onboard.”...Posted On:28-Apr-2020

China tightens management of international flight and ship crews - Xinhua ' English.news.cn - Xinhua
To prevent imported COVID-19 cases, China has ramped up the management of crew members of international ships and flights, according to the General Administration of Customs (GAC).
All crew members inbound and outbound must report their health conditions, while airlines and ships are required to carry out onboard body temperature tests and report to the GAC when any anomalies occur, said GAC official Song Yueqian at a press conference Monday.
The GAC has also been conducting risk assessments toward all incoming flights and ships, according to the official.
Ships should strictly prohibit irrelevant personnel from getting on or off the ships without permission, Song said.
Song also noted that nucleic acid tests will be carried out for some crew members disembarking from ships and flights of domestic or foreign airlines depending on their routes and duration of stay.
For Chinese crew members who change shifts and board ships at domestic ports, the customs will implement strict health inspection measures such as body temperature monitoring and medical inspections, said Song. EnditemPosted On:28-Apr-2020
