Dutch freighter collided with Maersk jack-up oil rig
General cargo ship FLUVIUS TAVY collided with berthed jack-up rig MAERSK GIANT at Esbjerg Harbor Denmark in the morning May 17, while maneuvering in the harbor. Loss of control said to be the cause, Captain allegedly wronged turning time. Reportedly, both freighter and rig suffered minor damages. MAERSK GIANT is awaiting her next deployment, FLUVIUS TAVY has arrived from Emden.

Ferry on fire, passengers and crew evacuated, Bali island Video
Ferry LABITRA ADINDA, connecting Gilimanuk port, Bali island, and Ketapang, Java, caught fire in the afternoon May 17 while crossing Bail Strait en route to Ketapang, with15 crew, 18 or 25 passengers and 13 vehicles on board. Upper deck was engulfed by fire, some passengers panicked, but luckily, all including crew were evacuated, no casualties reported, but some passengers were hospitalized. Fire said to be extinguished by a tug with water canon. Ferry was approaching Ketapang when fire started, and judging from latest available photo, she was intentionally grounded on the beach.

Explosions, fire on Chinese freighter, 1 killed
Cargo ship CHUANG SHENG HAI suffered an explosion on board in the afternoon May 16 in vicinity 22 06N 114 00E, west of Dangazhen, Wanshan Archipelago, south of Hong Kong. 1 of 12 crew was killed by explosion, the rest were rescued by nearby ships. SAR ship NANHAIJIU 116 (IMO 9607485) was sent to salvage cargo ship. Understood explosion occurred in engine room and spread around superstructure, the ship was loaded, reportedly, with cement in bulk. By morning May 17 fire was taken under control, 5-men emergency team boarded the ship. There was a second explosion of a gas tank. Understood the ship is salvaged, though AIS is absent since the time of explosion.

ITF, UAE Sign Deal to Protect Seafarers in UAE Waters
The International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Federal Transport Authority (FTA) agreed to work together to protect the rights of all seafarers operating in UAE waters.
The parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the matter at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in London. "This is a significant opportunity to work with our partners in the UAE to bring seafarers and workers’ safety to forefront of the conversation," Stephen Cotton, ITF general secretary, said.

EC Adopts Proposal to Simplify Ship Reporting
The European Commission has adopted a proposal with a view to increased harmonization of ship reporting requirements when calling at ports within the EU.
Earlier this year, Denmark on behalf of 13 EU member states sent the commission a letter emphasizing the need for an ambitious approach in this area and asking for the revision of the Reporting Formalities Directive. The commission s proposal includes establishing a common IT interface which ships can choose to report through, regardless of which port they call within the EU.

J. Lauritzen Hires Additional Bulk Carriers
Danish shipping company J. Lauritzen has chartered additional bulk carriers as it expects dry cargo market improvements for the remainder of the year.
"During the first quarter of 2018, additional bulk carriers were taken on long-term time-charter in anticipation of further dry cargo market improvements," Mads P. Zacho, CEO of Lauritzen, said. Specifically, a total of six Handysize bulkers were taken on charter with options of extension as well as of purchase, J. Lauritzen said in its quarterly update.

India, Indonesia to Promote Bilateral Cooperation in Maritime
Taking ahead the bilateral relations between India & Republic of Indonesia, Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Shipping met General (Retd.) Luhut Binser Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs of Indonesia, in New Delhi.
Ahead of the visit of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jakarta in May 2018, General (Retd.) Pandjaitan, who is on a 2-day visit to India met Shri Gadkari to discuss bilateral cooperation in the maritime sector between the two countries. The bilateral talks covered a wide range of topics including river rejuvenation, wastewater treatment, generating revenue streams from waste, enhancing shipping linkages between the two countries, developing ports and airports, training on light house technology and development of navigational aids.

Hormozgan Ports Throughput Increases 4.1%
Close to 8.22 million tons of oil and non-oil goods were loaded and unloaded in Hormozgan Province s ports during the first month of the current Iranian year (March 21-April 20), registering a 4.1% increase compared with the similar period of the year before. The announcement was made by director general of Hormozgan Ports and Maritime Organization, Allah-Morad Afifipour, the news portal of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development reported.

ENN seeks commissioning cargo for China s first private LNG import terminal
Chinese gas distributor ENN is seeking a commissioning cargo for the country s first privately owned liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal, three industry sources said. The cargo is for delivery in the middle of June, one of the sources said.
ENN s Zhoushan terminal in China s eastern Zhejiang region, with a capacity of 3 million tonnes per year, will likely start operations in two months, a senior company official told Reuters, declining to be named as he was not authorised to speak with media. "We are aiming to (start) the terminal in the second half of the year and are in the final stages now," the source said.

Financial closing gives Wartsila the go-ahead for building the new Hamina LNG terminal
The LNG terminal to be built at the Finnish Port of Hamina by the technology group Wärtsilä under a turnkey contract has reached financial close and received the necessary building permits.
Debt financing for the project has been concluded with Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken and Finnvera, the Finnish state-owned specialised financing company. The total investment is worth approximately 100 million euros. In addition to supplying the engineering, procurement, and construction of the terminal, Wartsila is also joining the project through a minority investment by WDFS (Wartsila Development and Financial Services) in Hamina LNG Oy. The main shareholders are Hamina Energy Ltd and Estonian energy company Alexela.

EU Ambassadors visit Peru s largest multipurpose terminal
APM Terminals Callao hosted an EU delegation of ambassadors representing 12 EU member states.. Led by the EU Ambassador in Peru, Diego Mellado, the visit was of special interest as annual trade between the EU and Peru is more than $10 billion, 60% of which are exports from Peru to the EU.
The trade agreement between the EU and Peru celebrated its fifth anniversary this year- and this month, the Lima Chamber of Commerce and Peru Eurocamaras signed an agreement to centralize EU efforts to promote economic development and investment.
