Philippines : Over 16,000 Filipino, foreign seafarers cleared at Manila port.
Over 16,000 Filipino and foreign seafarers on cruise ships anchored in in Manila Bay have been cleared to disembark by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic broke out.
In a statement on Friday, the BI said a total of 16,287 seafarers were cleared by the agency - 11,189 Filipinos and 5,098 foreigners.
BI Seaport Operations chief Alnazib Decampong said the seafarers disembarked from 42 vessels between April 16 to June 15 after undergoing mandatory quarantine procedures and COVID-19 tests.

Prince Rupert Port Authority leading the way for seafarers to have a shore-break.
Prince Rupert Port Authority is leading by example on International Seafarer's Day, July 25, in recognizing the plight of sailors on board ships during the COVID-19 pandemic. A shore break program has been created by developing methods for crews anchored in the Prince Rupert Harbour to come on land and maintain isolation.
A safe isolation space has been established outside the Northern Terminal allowing sailors to come ashore and relax for a few hours. More than 30 sailors used the space with it being the first time in months many of the mariners had set foot on land.

India : Maritime bodies transport 734 seamen through chartered flights on Day of the Seafarer.
To mark the Day of the Seafarer , leading maritime bodies on Thursday said they are transporting 734 Indian seafarers through chartered flights from Mumbai and New Delhi to Doha and back on Thursday.
The bodies MASSA and FOSMA have already announced that they have joined hands to transport about 4,000 Indian seafarers till June 30 in chartered flights as a non-profit mission to enable crew change across the globe.
On June 25 on the Day of the Seafarer , the Maritime Association of Shipowners Shipmanagers and Agents (MASSA) and The Foreign Ship-owners Representatives and Ship Managers Association (FOSMA) said they will transport 734 Indian seafarers through chartered flights from Mumbai and New Delhi to Doha (Qatar) and back on Thursday.

Technology Enhances Crew Well-being.
A new report published by satellite communications provider Inmarsat examines the ways technology can benefit crew safety, health and wellbeing at sea, at a moment when COVID-19 has exposed the welfare of seafarers to global scrutiny.
The report, "Welfare 2.0: How can the next generation of technology enable better crew safety, health and wellbeing at sea?", has been prepared by consultancy Thetius and follows an earlier "Trade 2.0" report focusing on the impact new technologies and start-ups can have on efficiency in vessel management.

British port authorities have detained five cruise ships amid concerns over the 1,500 crew members still stranded on board.
Transport secretary Grant Shapps said in a statement seen by The Guardian that the government will "not hesitate to continue to use every power within our control to safeguard the health and happiness" of the workers.
"The welfare of seafarers is of the utmost importance and we take any reports of safety concerns around crew incredibly seriously."

Several crew members aboard a container ship sitting off the coast of Virginia Beach have tested positive for the coronavirus.
For now, the 958-foot Maersk Idaho is anchored about 10 miles offshore as the shipping company Maersk Line, Limited works on a plan to evacuate the ship, bring the crew to a quarantine facility, clean the ship and then bring a new crew on board, said Patrick McCaffery, Maersk Line s general counsel.
One of the ship s all-American crew fell ill a few days before it arrived in Newark, New Jersey, on June 19, McCaffery said. The ship has an arrangement with a telemedicine provider, and the crew member was first diagnosed with pneumonia.

Panama facilitates crew changes from five Carnival Corp. ships.
Panama facilitated the repatriation of 295 crew from five Carnival Corp. ships, including Holland America Line s Oosterdam and Koningsdam.
Flights to Amsterdam, Manila, Jakarta
The crew were landed on tenders under strict sanitation procedures for transfer to charter flights from Panama City to Amsterdam, Manila and Jakarta.
Arriving crew
At the same time, 239 crew arrived in Panama to replace those going home.
Further flights to Nicaragua, Colombia, Peru
In addition, 138 crew were disembarked yesterday and will be flying home to Nicaragua, Colombia and Peru, according to Fernando Lay of shipping agency Norton Lilly.

Mercy Ships medics and crew: the epitome of key workers.
The Day of the Seafarer theme that seafarers are key workers is particularly relevant to Mercy Ships, which takes medical help on its converted ferry to some of the neediest parts of the world.
IMO secretary general Kitack Lim said he was deeply touched by "the challenges, hardships and sacrifices that seafarers have made to keep the global supply chain moving" during the coronavirus pandemic.

Singapore Observes Day of the Seafarer Completing 13,000 Crew Changes.
Marking the Day of the Seafarer, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) undertook several initiatives designed to assist seafarers in the port as well as highlighting its on-going efforts to facilitate crew changes and provide support to the maritime community.
The MPA has established a controlled and regulated environment to provide a safe corridor for crew members while also minimizing the risks to public health. Since the end of March, the MPA has approved more than 13,000 cases of crew sign-ons and sign-offs involving some 650 companies and 1,150 ships.
