Improving Seafarer Safety And Welfare: Innovation Challenge Seeks Solutions.
In partnership with Inmarsat and Shell Shipping and Maritime, Thetius has launched an Innovation Challenge in search for novel solutions to improve crew safety and welfare. Applications close on 16 September.
WOC - the Global Blue Economy Business Organization - invites support for Thetius efforts to seek solutions across four challenge areas:
1) Improving the safety of deck operations
2) Minimizing fatigue on board
3) Reducing administration onboard ships and enabling remote auditing
4) Improving the overall welfare of seafarers on board
From the submitted applications, a shortlist will be generated, and successful solutions invited to pitch their idea to a decision-making jury.Posted On:19-Aug-2020

Container ship disabled by fire, Mediterranean
Fire erupted on board of container ship X PRESS MONTE BIANCO early in the morning Aug 18 off Tarragona, Spain, Mediterranean, reportedly in engine room. Helicopter and SAR ship responded, delivering fire team and equipment. Fire is said to be taken under control, a lot of smoke and high temperature reported. The Philippines has experienced steady and resilient economic growth in the last few decades partly due to the surge in remittances from overseas Filipino workers, a good number of which are from the sea-based sector.

ITF seeks more flights to ease crew change woes.
The International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) said the global maritime industry continued to deal with crew change problems and has renewed calls for the government to ensure that the airline industry remains open to carry seafarers for their deployment.

ABS Grants AiP for Crew Transfer Vessel for U.S. Offshore Wind Ops.
BAR Technologies and Chartwell Marine have received Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for the design and construction of a BAR 30m crew transfer vessel (CTV) aimed for operations in the growing U.S. offshore wind sector.
In a joint statement on Tuesday, BAR and Chartwell said that securing AiP offered the highest level of assurance that these innovative vessel designs will be built in-line with specific US requirements.Posted On:19-Aug-2020

Mauritius arrests Indian captain, deputy of oil-spill ship.
Mauritian authorities on Tuesday arrested the Indian captain of a Japanese-owned shipwrecked off the island nation s coast, spewing tonnes of oil into pristine waters, police said.
