Rotor Sails Fitted on board Maersk s Tanker in a World s 1st
Two Norsepower Rotor Sails have been installed onboard Maersk Pelican, a Maersk Tankers Long Range 2 (LR2) product tanker vessel. The project is the first installation of wind-powered energy technology on a product tanker vessel. The aim is to test and analyse the technology while operating at sea as Maersk Tankers eyes fuel savings of up to 10 percent.

Maersk s Fuel Costs Set to Rise by USD 2 Bn from 2020 Sulphur Cap
The annual fuel bill of Danish shipping giant A.P.Moller Maersk is set to increase by USD 2 billion a year, at least, amid rising costs from the implementation of the 0.5 percent sulfur cap in 2020.
Simon Bergulf, director for regulatory affairs at A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S, told Bloomberg that the issues stemming from the new regulations have almost created a perfect storm, taking into account the expected tight availability of compliant fuels and required investments in infrastructure and research.

Star Bulk to Acquire Bulker Fleet from E.R. Capital Holding
Greece-based shipping firm Star Bulk Carriers (SBLK) has agreed to acquire up to seven dry bulk carriers from Germany s Erck Rickmers (E.R.) Capital Holding.
The company has inked an en bloc definitive agreement with entities affiliated with E.R. to acquire three firm operating dry bulk vessels within 2018, and four optional operating dry bulk vessels in 2019. The bulkers in question are ER Bourgogne, ER Brandenburg, ER Brighton, ER America, ER Bayonne, ER Borneo and ER Buenos Aires, all of them constructed in 2010.

Grindrod Shipping in Fleet Build-Up Mode Post Spin Off
Fresh from spin-off from Grindrod Limited, Nasdaq-listed shipowner Grindrod Shipping Holdings is taking advantage of historically low asset prices to strengthen its fleet with quality vessels.
Since the beginning of the year, the company has contracted to buy two 61,000 dwt Ultramax eco newbuilding resales in Japan for USD 26.4 million each and has agreed to charter-in three Ultramax eco vessels, with deliveries scheduled between Q3 2019 and Q3 2020.

Tanker collided with pier, terminal partially closed
Product tanker MEGANISI collided with pier at Jose Terminal Venezuela, on a weekend Aug 25-26, understood while mooring, on arrival from the US with cargo of naphtha. One of three main piers of Jose refinery was damaged and closed. No information on tanker s damages.

COSCO container ship fire
According to AIS records, the ship at the time of fire was in Malacca Strait, she reduced speed or stopped, then resumed sailing and reached Singapore anchorage in the morning Aug 24. She was berthed on Aug 25 at Tanjong Pagar Terminal, understood after safety check while at anchor. As of Aug 29, the ship was still docked in Singapore, no information on cargo and/or ship s damages.

Bulk carrier VELA maimed by dropped anchor in Arabian sea
Bulk carrier VELA portside anchor with all 330-meters long cable inadvertently dropped on Aug 11, according to ship s track, when the ship was in Maldives area, Indian ocean, en route from Singapore to Damietta. Anchor and chain weren t lost, they remained dangling in the water, making the ship hampered both in speed, down to 3-6 knots, and in maneuverability. VELA limped through Arabian sea and most of Gulf of Aden, until Indian Navy ship INS TEG came to assist, and sent an emergency team. By joint efforts, anchor and chain were recovered and secured on Aug 28, north of Djibouti. Bulk carrier resumed her voyage.

Holland America Line s Newest Ship Aces Sea Trials
Nieuw Statendam, Holland America Line s second Pinnacle Class ship, has succesfully completed two sets of sea trials off the Italian coast. The newbuilding returned to Fincantieri s Marghera shipyard in Italy on August 22.
Nieuw Statendam left Marghera on August 10 and performed the first set of sea trials over two days before going into dry dock at Fincantieri s Trieste shipyard, where the trial s data was reviewed and standard hull maintenance was performed.

Fire Breaks Out on Board Greek Ferry, Passengers Evacuated
A roll-on/roll-off passenger ship carrying more than 1,000 people on board caught fire while it was en route to Chania, Greece, in the early morning hours of August 29.
The fire occurred in a car parking compartment of Eleftherios Venizelos while the ship was sailing between the islands of Hydra and Ag. Georgiou, the Hellenic Fire Service said. On August 28, the ferry, carrying 875 passengers, 140 crew members and more than 200 vehicles, left the Port of Piraeus, heading for the Port of Chania.

Port Emissions Down at POLB as Throughput Rises
Another San Pedro Bay port managed to maintain lower levels of emissions even though its container traffic rose 11 percent in 2017. The Port of Long Beach (POLB) is continuing to outperform 2023 clean air goals for diesel particles and sulfur oxides, even while cargo volumes have jumped to record levels, according to a study of port-related air pollution emissions.
The 2017 annual "emissions inventory" found the port s actions to curb pollution have cut diesel particulates by 88 percent, sulfur oxides by 97 percent and nitrogen oxides by 56 percent since 2005, the baseline year which emissions are measured against.

Tema Port collaborates with United State Coast Guards on security
The United States Coast Guard has conducted an International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) audit of the Port of Tema.
The ISPS Code audit is a comprehensive set of measures to enhance the security of ships and port facilities, developed in response to the perceived threats to ships and port facilities. The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority has therefore collaborated with the United Coast Guard to assist and amend security arrangements inside Ghana s Ports.

Ports of Auckland s container terminal remains closed after worker incident
Ports of Auckland s container terminal remains closed as investigation continues into an incident that left a worker seriously injured after a straddle carrier he was operating tipped over.
Ports of Auckland spokesman Matt Ball said the terminal would not reopen until at least 7pm on Tuesday. The investigation is ongoing, and it is likely to be some time before the results are released.

Fitch Ratings Reaffirms Panama Canal s A Rating
For the third year, Fitch Ratings has affirmed the Panama Canal Authority s (ACP) A investment grade rating with a stable outlook for its long-term issuer default rating and its senior unsecured notes.
The credit rating agency highlighted the Canal s "stable volume performance, solid competitive position, and well-diversified cargo mix, causing [the] ACP s volume profile to exhibit high levels of resilience."
