Study : Newbuilding Activity Heavily Impacted by the Pandemic and Environmental Regulations.
The newbuilding activity has been severely impacted by the effects of the pandemic on global trade and shipping in general, with owners scaling back their investments. It's a situation, in which one has to include the already high uncertainty caused by the environmental regulations. In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Intermodal said that "the uneventful summer lull which is coming to an end soon has left its stigma on the newbuilding market, which has already been devastated by the global social and economic effects of Covid-19 pandemic during the first half of 2020.

India : Workers feel the heat as major ports on cusp of historic make-over.
State-owned Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) is drafting a special voluntary retirement scheme (SVRS), joining Chennai Port Trust in packing off workers as the Parliament looks set to pass a bill that seeks to convert 'port trusts' into 'port authorities' in the biggest structural reform of 11 of the 12 ports controlled by the Central government.
The Major Port Authorities Bill is included in the list of bills to be taken up for passage by Parliament in the monsoon session beginning Monday.

Philippines : DoLE offers free online courses to seafarers for Sept 14, 2020.
THE DEPARTMENT of Labor and Employment (DoLE) will launch free online courses to Fillipino seafarers to boost their knowledge and skills on safety, among other subjects.
"This is our way of keeping our seafarers active and productive whether they are at their respective homes spending quality time with their families, in quarantine facilities, or even when onboard ships. They will be able to receive their Certificate of Completion upon successful fulfilment of the online courses," Executive Director Joel B. Maglunsod of the National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP), A DoLE-attached agency, said in a statement on Sunday.

Fidelity warns of supply chain risks due to stranded seafarers.
Fidelity International, the $566bn asset manager, has called on companies and governments to urgently address an unfolding crisis in global supply chains as hundreds of thousands of ship workers remain stranded at sea because of the pandemic.
The investment house is contacting 30 companies, including shipowners, airlines and groups that charter ships, to raise concerns about the conditions facing seafarers.

Covid impact: Cargo handling at Indian ports drops 17% to 245 mn tonnes in Apr-August
Impacted by disruptions caused due to COVID-19, India s major ports continued to witness a fall in cargo handling, registering 16.56 per cent dip to 245.04 million tonnes (MT) between April and August this fiscal, according to the apex ports body IPA.
Cargo volumes at these 12 major ports under the control of the Centre declined for the fifth straight month in August 2020 and all ports barring Mormugao saw a negative growth.

Chief Officer fell overboard from PIL container ship, North Pacific
A man fell overboard from container ship KOTA LAZIM at around 0500 Tokyo time Sep 12 in the Pacific, abeam of Urup island, southern Kuril Archipelago, reportedly he is a Chief officer, 35-year old Chinese nationality. The ship interrupted voyage, turned back and started SAR, assisted by Japanese CG plane. As of 2200 Tokyo time Sep 12, the ship was adrift on a search track, understood continuing SAR. KOTA LAZIM is en route from Yangshan China to Manzanillo Mexico.

Tanker Master died in his cabin during voyage
Master of asphalt tanker GLOBAL LADY died of heart attack in his cabin on Sep 12 in Arabian sea. Tanker at the moment was off Karwar port, southwest India, en route from Chennai to UAE with cargo of asphalt. 48-year old Master of Indian nationality was found in cabin by crew, tanker interrupted voyage and called nearest port, Karwar, where he was declared dead.

Testing begins on an autonomous Mayflower ship ahead of its Atlantic voyage.
Humans aren t the only ones to have had their travel plans ruined by the coronavirus. A robot-powered boat that was due to cross the Atlantic this month has been forced to delay its voyage until next April after the virus caused complications in its development.
The autonomous 15-meter trimaran has been built to push the boundaries of autonomous shipping while gathering scientific data on the ocean.

Italian bulk carrier disabled after engine room accident, crew injured, medevaced.
Bulk carrier CHRISTIN suffered accident in understood, engine room, in Mediterranean south of Crete, during Sep 11-12, while en route from Damietta Egypt yo Barletta Italy, with cargo of fertilizers. The ship was disabled, but fixed problem and resumed voyage. One crew, oiler, was injured, in need of urgent medical assistance. The ship closed Crete on Sep 12, injured crew was airlifted to hospital by Greek Air Force helicopter.

"Environmental" radicals attacked Dutch dredger with stones and Molotov cocktails.
Hopper dredger QUEEN OF NETHERLANDS, owned by BOSKALIS WESTMINSTER SHIPPING B.V. and operated by BOSKALIS Indonesia, was attacked by boats with hundreds of fishermen and "activists" on Sep 12 off Makassar Port, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, when the ship was sailing to her new dredging or sand-mining site in waters of Takalar Regency, southernmost Sulawesi. The ship was shelled with stones and Molotov cocktails, which ignited several fires on board. Protesters also cut several pneumatic cables. QUEEN OF NETHERLANDS had to return back to Makassar Port, water police meanwhile, intervened and arrested 12 protesters.

Maersk Etienne migrants to be disembarked in Sicily after NGO rescue.
Twenty-seven migrants who were stranded on board an oil tanker on Hurd s Bank for 38 days are finally set to disembark in Sicily.
Rescue NGOs announced on Saturday evening that the migrants stranded on board the Danish-flagged tanker Maersk Etienne since their rescue on August 4, will be taken to Sicily after Malta refused responsibility for their disembarkation, insisting the rescue had taken place outside the country s search-and-rescue zone.

Royal Caribbean is building the new world s largest cruise ship despite the pandemic still halting sailings.
Royal Caribbean s new Wonder of the Seas cruise ship was transferred to an outfitting dock on September 5 in preparation for its 2022 debut despite the current tumultuous state of the travel industry amid the pandemic. The construction of the ship was first announced in 2019 as the fifth boat in Royal Caribbean s "Oasis" lineup, which consists of the world s biggest cruise ships, according to the cruise line.

India : Crew change at Vizhinjam marred by a ship agent s attempt to block rivals from taking up work.
Crew change on ships at Vizhinjam near Thiruvananthapuram has been roiled by efforts of a local steamer agent to block rivals from undertaking staff swap.
Dowins Resources Pvt Ltd, a local steamer agent, has formed an association - Minor Ports Traditional Steamer Agents Association - with the aim of creating a monopoly over crew change business at Vizhinjam.

Abu Dhabi Ports making headway with Khalifa Port expansion.
Abu Dhabi Ports has affirmed that the expansion of Khalifa Port is on track for a phase one opening by the first quarter of 2021, as well as equipment enhancements at Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT).
The Khalifa Port expansion, announced in December 2019, aims to boost capacity with 200 metres of quay wall and almost 175,000 sqm of land within Khalifa Port Logistics handed over ahead of the project’s full phase one completion in the first quarter of next year.
